Revealing Visions (Valentine/Petrilo Volume 4) by Reyna Hawk

NEW RELEASE

Revealing Visions (Valentine/Petrilo Volume 4) by Reyna Hawk

We thought The Valentine/Petrilo Series was complete. Shattered Visions Haunted Memories, the third book in the series, was released in September 2012. Now, Revealing Visions is here to tell us the back-story of characters Janie, Daniel, Rico, and Malachi. If you've ever wondered just how all the characters came to be connected and what the "behind the scenes" activities were, you won't want to miss this book!
The series itself follows the life of Janie Valentine as she becomes entangled with the Petrilo Crime Family. Janie desperately wants a normal life with the love of her life Rico Battaglia, the assistant to the Mob Boss of one of New York's most powerful crime families. However, Janie gets anything but normal when she finds herself on the crime family's hit list.
Read my earlier blog posts for more information about book 1, book 2, and book 3 in the series. The three books are also available in one volume, Valentine Petrilo Trilogy

You can join in the Public Online Release Party on Facebook to celebrate Reyna's new release.

Description
From the beginning, Janie's life was in turmoil; brought up in a home with abuse and lies.

Daniel always did what he felt was in the best interest of his sister, Janie.

Rico's love for Janie was never-ending; from the first moment he laid eyes on the woman she had become.

Malachi was no stranger to heart break. Janie's arrival brought him hope for the future and a hurt he wouldn't soon forget.

This is the back story to the Valentine/Petrilo Series characters. See where they came from and what was going on "behind the scenes". This novella will tell all the dirty little secrets that have been left untold... until now.

Read my earlier blog post for more information about the first two books in the series. The three books are now also available in one volume, Valentine Petrilo Trilogy

Description
Just when Janie thought she had all she ever dreamt, the powers that be would suddenly change her course; throwing Janie head long into a world of uncertainty and casting a puzzling shadow on all this life she’d grown to love. Janie would soon discover nothing in her world was what it appeared. Leaving her confused, broken, and determined to find the answers in a new but familiar realm filled with secrets and deception.
Memories and turbulence lead Janie on her quest to discover the truth concerning herself, her past, the Petrilo crime family, and her brother’s murder. Is Rico's unfinished business in Cherokee to finish the hit the Petrilos put on her? Is Malachi willing to take a bullet for his new love; or will he walk away from the danger and free himself of the drama Janie has brought to his once peaceful life? Love and deceit will lead them all to the truth.

Excerpt
Janie ran as fast as she could back to the room. She slowly slid it in the slot until the green light flashed then pushed the door slightly open, flipping on the light by the door to give her a small beacon into the room. Janie saw the pictures hanging off the walls, the glass smashed, and over turned chairs. Her heart raced as she thought of what she could find in this room. This was her biggest fear; she’d find Rico dead. Janie ventured slowly into the room looking about for Rico but she could hardly see two feet in front of her face. Just then she stumbled on an overturned chair and nearly fell; suddenly she felt the barrel of a gun at her temple and heard the gun being cocked.
“Jesus Rico it’s me!” Janie froze right in her tracks. The room filled with light as Rico turned on a table lamp and slowly removed the gun from her temple. He looked like a wild man. His clothes looked as if he’d slept in them for those four days, it was evident he hadn’t showered or shaved, his hair uncombed and partially hanging out of the usual neat ponytail. His eyes looked sunken and glassy. He was pale and smelled of liquor.
“Where have you been?” He gruffed coldly and angrily.
“Rico? Are you ok?” Janie went to him to hug him but he pulled away as if she’d burnt him.
“I asked you a question.” He ordered, in all the years she had known him, Rico never acted this way.
“I’m gonna tell you, but I want to make sure you’re ok.” Janie was shocked at his actions and behavior. He had lost complete control of himself and was looking at her as if he didn’t even know her.
“Answer the question.”
“I went to Greenwood.” Janie’s heart was pounding so loudly she was sure he heard it. He was terrifying her. She’d only seen two other men look like this, Scott and her father. Rico was much stronger than either one of them, if he hit her she’d be dead.

Review

By William D. Curnutt

I waited with anticipation for the final book in the three book series by Reyna Hawk. I wanted to know how life was going to end up for Janie. I wanted to know if she and Malachi would find true happiness. I wanted to know if her memory would come back completely. I wanted to know that the last part of book two was only a dream and not reality and that she would wake up and things would be great.

Well, I got a lot more than I bargained for. Reyna Hawk certainly knows how to surprise her readers and how to change up scenario's throughout her stories. I found myself not wanting to put the book down because I wanted to know what the next twist to the story was going to be. I found myself getting more anxious and the book was coming closer to an end. I found myself nervous that I wasn't going to like how things turned out. I found myself conflicted about how things were going.

So, was I happy with what happens? Not exactly. I had to write to Reyna and have a dialogue with her about how the story developed and where it went. I was concerned about one part of the story that was so different from the first two books. Janie's vocabulary was not what I expected after books one and two. At one point in the book another character says to her, "When did you develop such a potty mouth." I found myself agreeing. I didn't like it, but I wondered why it had been developed.

Reyna helped me to understand. So, I will give you a hint so that as you read the book you will understand. Janie is confused, frightened, frustrated and conflicted about who she really loves and why. As such she is lashing out because of all that has happened to her. She is trying to make sense of everything. With that explanation things came more into focus for me. So, I hope with that explanation they will come more into focus for you.

I loved the way Reyna brings real life to bear on the characters in her book. She brings real emotion. She brings real character flaws and she brings real character fear and frustration. She portrays how each of us has a fantasy life where people are perfect, or at least we make them what we want to make them. But then reality sets in and we see them for who they really are. They are not necessarily as perfect as we thought, but maybe they are! People will surprise you in how they act in real life. Sometimes what they do is more perfect than we think.

So, as you read ask yourself this, how would I respond if I were in Janie's shoes? How would I respond if people around me were lying to me? How would I respond if I were frightened for my life? How would I respond if everything was going to hell in a hand basket. Then you might just understand Janie a bit more.
I guarantee you that you won't put this book down until you get to the end. But if you haven't read the first two in the series you really need to read them first or you will be totally lost in this book.

Enjoy!

Review
When I was approached to read and write a review for this new author I wasn't sure what to expect. Usually I am blessed or disappointed with new writers. This time I was definitely blessed. Reyna Hawk has crisp clean writing skills. She develops characters well and develops plot lines extremely well. The book is about half the length of most novels now a days but that was not a drawback. As a matter of fact the plot was so well developed that the only disappointment in shortness was that the story was over and I wanted more. But she has another installment coming later this fall, so not too long to wait.
Now for the book review:
Daniel and Janie are brother and sister and are facing life together and alone. Their parents died in a house fire that appeared to be mysterious. The local townspeople are a bit afraid of Janie because she has the ability to see visions of the future or see into someone's soul by just touching their hands. Now it is not with everyone, just with some. But enough so that people think she is a witch and maybe had something to do with her parents death.
Daniel lands a new job that is going to pay lots of money, but they have to move to California. So, they move. Daniel sets Janie up in a new home that is modest but very comfortable. He helps her to get a job (at a local bar even though she is not yet 21). The owner of the bar is connected with Daniel's new boss.
Janie meets Scott, a musical celebrity who falls for her. The problem is he is abusive. Daniel then introduces Janie to three of his friends, his boss and two associates. Janie is nervous around them because it appears they are not nice people. But one of them, Rico, thinks Janie is beautiful and wants to get to know her better. But what about Scott?
Worse than Scott is that Rico and friends are part of the Italian Mafia from New York. This makes things tense. If Rico wants to be with Janie then Scott might want to look elsewhere for love so that he may maintain his health.
During this time Daniel is murdered. He dies in a burning car. Why? It appears to be a mob hit. Janie is left now without any family and without the one person who cares for her. Janie finds a note from Daniel, it tells her that something might happen to him and if it does to stay close to Rico because he is the only one that Daniel trusts and secondarily Rico loves Janie. Really, stay close to the mob guy? Hmmmm.
Back to Scott. Scott eventually goes ballistic and kidnaps Janie. Enter Rico and Anthony and friends to save the day, OK, they save Janie but it costs Scott big time. Rico takes Janie with him back to New York and now she has to live with the mafia while maintaining their secret about what happened to Scott.
To make things short, good goes to bad and Janie becomes a liability. Anthony wants Rico to end Janie's life. Can he do it? Will he do it? What will happen when he tries to do it? Will Janie survive and bring done an Italian Mafia family?
Those are the questions and the story does a wonderful job of making you want to know what is going to happen. Part of the plot is predictable but then out of left field a surprise comes along that really helps with the plot.
The ending is good and will give you the desire to know more about what is going to come next.
I'm sure you will enjoy this new writer and her work as much as I did.
One disclaimer for my church readers. There is a bit of steamy sex in the book, not bad, not over the top too much. But it is there. If you know my drill, just skip those few paragraphs and it won't distract from the overall story. Remember this is a crime family and their morals are not necessarily the same as yours :)
Enjoy! (By William D. Curnutt)

Reflection of Secrets (Volume 2)

Description
Janie had high hopes of getting her life on the right path and freedom from the Petrilo Crime Family, but more tragedies and startling revelations send her plans right out the window. Janie's past trouble and sadness lurk back from the shadows. The beautiful life Janie has come to love takes a turn leading her right back to where she started in the clutches of the Petrilos. Will Janie survive another go around with the organized crime family?

Review
In Book two of her trilogy we join Janie, her brother Daniel, and her new best friend, Malachi Wolfe and Janie tries to get her life under control. Janie has given birth to Daniella and is trying to start her new life living under Malachi's roof.
Malachi does his best to bring comfort and care to Janie, without asking for anything in return. He loves Daniella as though she were his own daughter. He provides, protects and brings a sense of healing and safety to the lives of mother and daughter.
But brother Daniel is not too sure that he wants Janie living with Malachi. They have a falling out because of this, but Daniel upon further investigation decides that Malachi is OK and actually finds himself liking this man.
Malachi's family comes more into play in this 2nd novel. They come around he and Janie and Daniella and really start to bond with them. Janie is finding healing. But she doesn't want her daughter to forget her father, so each evening she shows her a picture of Rico and tells her that he is her daddy.
Things are going well and we start to learn more about Malachi. It turns out that he has a special gift, much like Janie does. He is a gifted `holy man' of the Cherokee people. He brings insights and healing to others, and when she is ready he will bring healing to Janie from her emotional pain.
Eventually Janie settles into a good life, a safe life, a protected life. The FBI wants her to testify against the Petrilo mob family, but she doesn't have to. Anthony gets sentenced to 25 years in prison and it appears that things are going to be good for Janie and her baby and they don't need to worry.
But then tragedy hits again, someone kidnaps her daughter, neither she nor Malachi saw this coming and they are distraught. Months go by and the FBI is unable to find Daniella. They don't believe the Mob has taken her, so who has?
Janie and Malachi come to terms with the loss, they come to terms with their relationship and they get married. Janie gets pregnant and even though her daughter is missing she and Malachi are moving on.
Then an accident happens, Malachi falls off the roof and is injured. He is rushed to the hospital. While there Janie's water breaks and she gives birth to their child . . .  or she at least is in the process of giving birth. Everything goes black and then . . .
Well, let's just say the story takes a very interesting turn at this point. The last third of the book focuses on how our minds can play tricks on us, or at least it appears that is happening.
Reyna Hawk brings a twist to the story that you won't see coming. She brings a surprise that you might not like, or you just might think is cool. I know I was caught off guard and wasn't sure I liked this new twist. But the more I read the more I was caught up in what was happening.
Janie's mind is playing tricks and you won't know where it is going to head and how it is going to end.
The best part, in true Trilogy fashion you are left hanging, wanting to know how things are going to turn out. I haven't been this interested in the next volume of a series since reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Reyna's writing continues to be refreshing, well balanced, engaging and well frankly, just so down to earth that I feel like these folks have become some of my best friends and I just want the best for them. I am so drawn to these characters that I am left speechless wanting to know what is going to happen.
Enjoy! (By William D. Curnutt)

Apocalypse Island by Mark Edward Hall

Apocalypse Island by Mark Edward Hall

Description
A small Maine city has turned into a killing ground.
Is it a serial killer, someone with a penchant for the macabre and a need to destroy?
Or is it a darker force, an ancient legend from a mysterious Island come ashore to wreak havoc upon the unsuspecting?
Amid the backdrop of Portland’s burgeoning night scene, Police Lieutenant Rick Jennings discovers that no one is safe, and that evil has many faces.
Danny Wolf, a gifted musician with alcohol problems is witnessing brutal murder in his dreams. Someone is carving a cross on each of the young female victims before crucifying them.
Newly released from prison for a crime he did not commit, Wolf is having trouble adjusting to civilian life. He believes the dreams are a symptom of his adjustment until he discovers that they are real and that the victims are his own groupies. He soon begins to doubt his sanity. Could he be a homicidal madman?
Wolf has no memory of his early childhood but discovers that he spent his first eight years in a Catholic orphanage on a mysterious island off the coast of Maine. Is it possible that his early life and the murders are somehow connected?
Soon the killings become more bold and gruesome, as members of the church begin to die.
Enter Police Lieutenant Rick Jennings and his young assistant Laura Higgins. They discover a government conspiracy involving the Catholic Church, and a cold war CIA mind control program known as MK-Ultra where children were used as test subjects.
Danny Wolf becomes the number one suspect in the murders, but no one, not even Wolf, is prepared for what they discover on Apocalypse Island, a mind blowing secret that was supposed to stay hidden forever.
Apocalypse Island is a fast-paced thriller that will keep you guessing until the shocking conclusion.

Review
Danny Wolf was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, but offered early parole if he agreed to psychological counseling. The nightmares he experienced in prison intensified upon his release, making him question his own sanity. When he becomes the main suspect in a string of ritualistic murders in the area he also begins to doubt his innocence. As he and the authorities try to unravel the mystery, they become embroiled in a huge government conspiracy, where no one is innocent.
Twists and turns abound in this supernatural thriller. It will definitely hold your interest and keep you turning pages to find out how the heck it's all going to resolve. Mr. Hall has done an excellent job developing the characters and setting scenes while building the tension. The story is well-crafted and the writing is crisp and very unique. Part thriller, part mystery, part horror, part supernatural, and totally riveting! Fabulous job, Mr. Hall. (By mountainmama)
