Excerpt

Spud gave Salty a nudge while Chompy ducked behind the others. “Hello sir. I’m Salty and these are my friends Spud, Cookie and Chompy. We’d like to volunteer for your circus.”
And get free tickets!” Spud piped up.
“Uh, what Spud means, Mr. P. Nutt, is that...”
“Spud’s right, Salty. I need volunteers and you need tickets. Now let’s see…Salty, you can dress up the animals backstage; Cookie, you can sell popcorn; and Spud, you can stamp hands as guests come in. Now if I only had a tall, skinny...”

My Review
I received this book in return for an honest review.

By Lynda Dickson
When the circus comes to town, Chompy and his friends volunteer to help out and receive tickets to the show in return. Chompy overcomes his fear of clowns and, with the aid of his Chompy Juice, helps out a friend.
Along with Chompy, children reading this book should overcome their fear of clowns by learning that, underneath the makeup and costumes, clowns are just like anybody else.
A nice story of friendship and bravery, supplemented with the colorful illustrations by Lauren Goldstein.

Interview with the Author
Author Nancy Beaule stops by today to talk about her new book, A Peek Under the Big Top.
For what age group do you recommend your book?
I recommend the whole series for children ages 3 to 9.
What sparked the idea for this book?
My interest in nutrition and how I wanted to get a subtle message to children. So, I came up with the idea to use food characters, with the main character being a carrot. I felt he needed to be a superhero so came up with the idea of superpower eyesight when he consumed a drink called Chompy Juice that contained carrots. It led to situations whereby he's used his powers to rescue others, most notably Candybar, the antagonist.
So, which comes first? The characters or the story?
The idea came first, with stories developing along the way.
What was the hardest part to write in this book?
The scene where Candybar is trapped under a tree because we didn't want him to be (or appear) injured. It was tricky for the illustrator, who needed to show him trapped but unhurt, so we decided he could be flexible. It is the first time in the series where he is shown bending.
I think you succeeded there! How do you hope this book affects its readers?
I want children who have a fear of clowns (my grandson being one of them) to learn that they are just people in costumes and not to be afraid.
How long did it take you to write this book?
About a month. My first picture book took over a year!
What is your writing routine?
I just wrote my first YA novel, and usually I would write the most in the mornings.
How did you get your book published?
The picture books are all self-published, but I am seeking traditional publishing for the YA novel.
What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?
I took some online courses through Write Storybooks for Children, and they were invaluable. You also have to stick with it and not give up.
What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I love adventure - ski-diving, white water rafting, hiking, etc. I also enjoy cooking and doing anything with our grandchildren.
What does your family think of your writing?
I just read my books to my grandchildren's classes and they were proud, which is an awesome feeling. My family is very supportive.
Please tell us a bit about your childhood.
I grew up in the 1950s and 1960s and had a pretty normal “Leave it to Beaver” childhood, where my father went to work every day and my mother stayed home. It was a much slower paced lifestyle than you see nowadays. We ate dinner together at the table every night, which is rare today.
Did you like to read when you were a child?
Yes, but not any more or less than other kids. When I became a mother, I read to my kids all the time, then I started reading more for myself also.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
When I was in my early 50s. I went to a writer's group meeting and was unprepared for the group writing prompts. It didn't go well, and I felt that I didn't have the talent to write and shelved my project for many years. But it always nagged at me, and I never stopped thinking about it. I published my first picture book at age 60.
Did your childhood experiences influence your writing?
My whole life influences my writing. Having been an entrepreneur most of my adult life, I rode the highs and lows of working for myself and have incorporated some of that into my novel.
Which writers have influenced you the most?
I love James Patterson's books, Sandra Brown, Nicholas Sparks. I like mysteries and suspense novels.
Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
They tell me that their kids love the Chompy stories and ask for them before bed.
What can we look forward to from you in the future?
I will be publishing Volume 6 in the Chompy series sometime in the future, and I am beginning a sequel to my YA Novel, The Joker's Revenge.
Anything else you would like to add?
I recently entered two of the Chompy books in the 2019 RPLA Awards, and Spud's First Day Surprise was a semi-finalist and The Greasy Chip was a finalist.

Fantastic news! Congratulations and thank you for stopping by today, Nancy. Best of luck with your future projects.

Description
A spyglass. A rare amulet. An ancient prophecy. Trapped in the past.
Moving to his grandfather’s farm was the last thing Mitch Howell wanted, but his parents did it anyway. Left on his own, Mitch sneaks into the attic of his grandfather’s house and discovers a spyglass. Curious about the spyglass and its connection to his loony great-grandpa, he doesn’t realize it’s really a portal to the past and the key to an ancient prophecy until it’s too late. Thrown back in time to Ancient Egypt with his best friend, Brock, the boys are on a quest to find their way home. But they aren’t the only ones who know the powers of the spyglass.
Can Mitch and Brock get home before the spyglass falls into the wrong hands and changes the world forever?

Excerpt
The hinges of the bus door squealed open.  Mitch knew he only needed to take two steps to enter, but his feet refused to move.  The bus driver, who could barely see over the steering wheel, stared at him expectantly, his hand resting on the door lever.
"Mitch," his sister, Alyssa, hissed in his ear.  "Don't just stand there.  Get on the bus."
She shoved him in the back, and he stepped forward.
"Morning," the bus driver said as he reached the top of the steps.
"Morning," Mitch mumbled to the floor.
Not looking up, he threw his backpack in the first empty seat, landing on top of it.  Alyssa barrelled past him.  He glared at her retreating back before he slid over and stared at his reflection in the glass of the bus window, ignoring the bright green shoots of wheat poking through the ground in a field beside the road.
His mom was right--he looked miserable.  Which wasn't a surprise to Mitch. He felt miserable.  He'd felt that way ever since they moved to Fairview.  what was surprising was that his mom even noticed.  She was so busy unpacking and helping Dad on the farm, he wasn't sure she knew he existed anymore.

Praise for the Book
“Perfect for an upper grade school or middle school aged boy. I am not a boy, and yet I also found this book to be enjoyable and it kept me turning the page even until 1am! Can't wait for the next book in the series! Love H.R. Hobbs! She is a gifted storyteller.” ~ LLM
“This is a fun read from the start, and holds the mystery and suspense throughout. It also deals well with themes around accepting and handling change in life, which is especially great for tween and teen readers. I am looking forward to book 2 of the series.” ~ Melanie
“I would have loved to have had this to read as a child. Anyone who has ever felt like an outsider growing up (and who has not I imagine) will relate to the struggle to make friends and find your place in a new setting. The imagery is great, interesting setting in ancient Egypt ... and it moves along. A terrific gift for the 8-12 year old reader in your household or family.” ~ LLC
“The mystery is what kept me going through the entire book. Mitch and Brock were so believable I thought that I was sitting right there during their adventure. I held my breath every time I though Mitch was about to find the answer to his great grand father George. Well put together and a great read for all ages. I will be recommending this story to my 12 year old nephew and my other nephews as well.” ~ foxglove1028
“The author has a real talent and a fabulous way with words. The story effortlessly unfolds with authenticity - especially in regards to the relationship the boys have and how they interact with others. The main storyline was cleverly interwoven with other subplots and life lessons that kept the story moving at a fast clip. I loved how the author had shared a fair amount of interesting Egyptian history which was delivered in an artful, natural manner rather than an info dumping overload. I can’t wait to share this book with my children and have no doubt it will be a favourite on the shelf!! I look forward to reading book 2.” ~ Corina Ann Douglas

Book Video

Excerpt
The earthquake that woke Bobby Ether from his nightmare wasn’t a typical Los Angeles tremor. Growing up in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley, Bobby had experienced enough quakes to know most of them lasted only a few seconds - over by the time you realized they were happening. Not this one.
The entire room shook as Bobby sat upright in bed and rubbed his eyes. The windows rattled and the freestanding dresser in the corner bounced up and down. In a stupor, the long-legged sixteen-year-old stumbled out of bed and headed for his desk to climb underneath.
Nausea washed over him as the floor heaved. Still reliving the nightmare from moments before he awoke, Bobby scurried under his desk before the rumbling finally subsided. Climbing out slowly, he moved to the window, where a foot-long crack had appeared in the drywall below the sill.
It was almost midnight. The next-door neighbor’s house was quiet and dark: no lights or alarms. The water in their backyard swimming pool stood placid.
What the heck?
Bobby brushed locks of wavy blond hair off his forehead, exposing beads of cold sweat. Racing downstairs, he turned on the television in the den and flipped through the channels, but there was no news about a quake. It was only a dream, he told himself. The earthquake, the nightmare, none of it was real.
The phone rang and Bobby jumped. Wiping his suddenly clammy hands on his pajamas, he headed across the dining room to the phone in the kitchen and snatched the receiver off the hook.
“Hello?” he said.
The female voice was cold and mechanical. “Is this Bobby Ether?”
“Who is this?”
“This is Saint Michelle’s hospital. I’m calling from the emergency center.”
Bobby felt the blood drain from his face.
“Hello, are you there?” asked the woman from the hospital.
Bobby’s mouth had turned bone dry.
“We need you to come to the hospital right away,” said the woman. “There’s been an accident.”
The phone slipped from Bobby’s hand, nearly falling to the floor before he caught it and hauled it back up.
The voice on the other end was still speaking. “Sir? Are you still there?”
