Excerpt

Spud gave Salty a nudge while Chompy ducked behind the others. “Hello sir. I’m Salty and these are my friends Spud, Cookie and Chompy. We’d like to volunteer for your circus.”
And get free tickets!” Spud piped up.
“Uh, what Spud means, Mr. P. Nutt, is that...”
“Spud’s right, Salty. I need volunteers and you need tickets. Now let’s see…Salty, you can dress up the animals backstage; Cookie, you can sell popcorn; and Spud, you can stamp hands as guests come in. Now if I only had a tall, skinny...”

My Review
I received this book in return for an honest review.

By Lynda Dickson
When the circus comes to town, Chompy and his friends volunteer to help out and receive tickets to the show in return. Chompy overcomes his fear of clowns and, with the aid of his Chompy Juice, helps out a friend.
Along with Chompy, children reading this book should overcome their fear of clowns by learning that, underneath the makeup and costumes, clowns are just like anybody else.
A nice story of friendship and bravery, supplemented with the colorful illustrations by Lauren Goldstein.

Interview with the Author
Author Nancy Beaule stops by today to talk about her new book, A Peek Under the Big Top.
For what age group do you recommend your book?
I recommend the whole series for children ages 3 to 9.
What sparked the idea for this book?
My interest in nutrition and how I wanted to get a subtle message to children. So, I came up with the idea to use food characters, with the main character being a carrot. I felt he needed to be a superhero so came up with the idea of superpower eyesight when he consumed a drink called Chompy Juice that contained carrots. It led to situations whereby he's used his powers to rescue others, most notably Candybar, the antagonist.
So, which comes first? The characters or the story?
The idea came first, with stories developing along the way.
What was the hardest part to write in this book?
The scene where Candybar is trapped under a tree because we didn't want him to be (or appear) injured. It was tricky for the illustrator, who needed to show him trapped but unhurt, so we decided he could be flexible. It is the first time in the series where he is shown bending.
I think you succeeded there! How do you hope this book affects its readers?
I want children who have a fear of clowns (my grandson being one of them) to learn that they are just people in costumes and not to be afraid.
How long did it take you to write this book?
About a month. My first picture book took over a year!
What is your writing routine?
I just wrote my first YA novel, and usually I would write the most in the mornings.
How did you get your book published?
The picture books are all self-published, but I am seeking traditional publishing for the YA novel.
What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?
I took some online courses through Write Storybooks for Children, and they were invaluable. You also have to stick with it and not give up.
What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I love adventure - ski-diving, white water rafting, hiking, etc. I also enjoy cooking and doing anything with our grandchildren.
What does your family think of your writing?
I just read my books to my grandchildren's classes and they were proud, which is an awesome feeling. My family is very supportive.
Please tell us a bit about your childhood.
I grew up in the 1950s and 1960s and had a pretty normal “Leave it to Beaver” childhood, where my father went to work every day and my mother stayed home. It was a much slower paced lifestyle than you see nowadays. We ate dinner together at the table every night, which is rare today.
Did you like to read when you were a child?
Yes, but not any more or less than other kids. When I became a mother, I read to my kids all the time, then I started reading more for myself also.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
When I was in my early 50s. I went to a writer's group meeting and was unprepared for the group writing prompts. It didn't go well, and I felt that I didn't have the talent to write and shelved my project for many years. But it always nagged at me, and I never stopped thinking about it. I published my first picture book at age 60.
Did your childhood experiences influence your writing?
My whole life influences my writing. Having been an entrepreneur most of my adult life, I rode the highs and lows of working for myself and have incorporated some of that into my novel.
Which writers have influenced you the most?
I love James Patterson's books, Sandra Brown, Nicholas Sparks. I like mysteries and suspense novels.
Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
They tell me that their kids love the Chompy stories and ask for them before bed.
What can we look forward to from you in the future?
I will be publishing Volume 6 in the Chompy series sometime in the future, and I am beginning a sequel to my YA Novel, The Joker's Revenge.
Anything else you would like to add?
I recently entered two of the Chompy books in the 2019 RPLA Awards, and Spud's First Day Surprise was a semi-finalist and The Greasy Chip was a finalist.

Fantastic news! Congratulations and thank you for stopping by today, Nancy. Best of luck with your future projects.

My Review

By Lynda Dickson
When Coach Brock O. Lee comes to town, Chompy and his Munchy Bunch friends decide to join the new baseball team. Salty is especially excited. But the coach needs to make some changes if they want to play, starting with exercise, healthy eating, and his secret weapon!
This is a fun adventure with a healthy message. At the end of the book, the author even includes ten tips for making healthy foods more fun for children.

About the Author
Nancy Beaule
The Secret Formula is Nancy's debut book. What began as a way to keep her grandchildren entertained, has evolved into an exciting series about a carrot named Chompy who discovers an ancient carrot formula for super-powered eyesight. The series, called Chompy & The Munchy Bunch, is geared toward 4-9 year olds, and while the kids love re-enacting the "Chompy Juice" portion of the book, parents appreciate the hidden nutritional messages. Volume 2, Search for the Hidden Treasure, was published in September 2016, Volume 3, Spud's First Day Surprise, in April 2017, and Volume 4, The Greasy Chip, in November 2017.
Nancy's path to writing is a bit unorthodox, having spent the last 30 years as an entrepreneur/inventor. In the 80's she operated a print shop before inventing a product called the Pie Saver, which are foil rings that prevent pies from burning, came from her love of baking! "Running a business is similar to writing - there are lots of ups and downs but you can never give up!" Now with three grandchildren to enjoy, she felt the time was right to try her hand at writing children's books, and the children are loving Chompy and his pals! Nancy has two children and lives in Maine and Florida with her husband of 41 years.

Excerpt
As Chompy munched on his last carrot, something poking through a thick layer of dust caught his eye.
“Salty, look at this bottle!! It’s gotta be Doc Peppa’s supereye formula! I wonder what it tastes like......”
CHUG ...CHUG....GLUG...GLUG... BOING!!

By Lynda Dickson
Chompy the healthy carrot, Salty the potato chip, Candybar the candy-eating trickster, his little sister Cupcake, and Weiner the dog visit the abandoned Peppa Mansion to find out more about Doc Peppa's supereye carrot formula. They all get a fright, but is the mansion really haunted?
The characters all have distinctive characteristics and mannerisms, and the illustrations by Lauren Goldstein match up well. The author uses words to great effect to further enhance the images in our heads (e.g., "A sudden wave of icy cold air sprinkled them with goose bumps.") and to create a spooky atmosphere. She also subtly conveys the message of healthy eating through the actions of the different characters. I'm a bit disturbed by how our friends enter Doc Peppa's home uninvited and how Chompy appropriates Doc Peppa's secret formula and calls it Chompy Juice. But if you go with the flow, this is a fun, scary story that will have the kids jumping with fright as well as laughing at the silly antics.
Good fun for ages 3 and up.

Search for the Hidden Treasure
(Chompy & the Munchy Bunch Book 2)

Description
A secret treasure is hidden deep inside the mysterious Peppa Mansion! Chompy, Salty, and Weiner set out to solve the mystery ... but will Candybar shake up their plans? Will Chompy Juice be involved?
Volume 2 in the Chompy & the Munchy Bunch series, this story has plenty of action to keep children entertained again and again!

Excerpt
The heavy door creaked open as Chompy and Salty entered the mansion, scanning the dark room as Chompy’s flashlight danced in his jittery hand, abruptly stopping on a very strange-looking carpet.
A pair of dark glowing eyes seemed to stare right through them!  Coarse dark fur stretched long across the dusty floor.  It was more than Weiner could stand!  He poked his nose under the carpet while Chompy bent down to take a closer look.
Suddenly the carpet reared up towards them like a serpent rising from the dark sea!
"YIKES IT’S ALIVE!” screamed Chompy, leaping on Salty’s back.  “AAAHHHH!”
Down...down...down they went through a rotten floorboard, SMACK onto Candybar’s trap!
Up...up...up sailed Candybar, landing THUD.....right in the middle of a HUGE spider’s nest!

Praise for the Book
"This is the second book in the series and it just keeps getting better. Again we meet Chompy the carrot and his mate, Salty. Their search picks up from the previous book and takes them on a fun and fast-paced adventure. Kids are going to love the illustrations, too. They are really quite funny. This is going to be a hit with most young and older readers. Let's face it, any book that includes the baddie getting covered in spider poop is sure to be a winner! Well done, Nancy. Keep up the good work." ~ Susan Day (Author/illustrator Astrol's Adventures)
"I think this one was just as good as the first book. Great drawings and characters. I recommend to all families. " ~ Stacie Williams
"Nancy Beaule's delightful children's book puts forth the message that you reap what you sow. [...] I enjoyed the second installment of Chompy & the Munchy Bunch, and recommend it to those aged between 4-7, enabling them to realize their full potential, regardless of the fear and obstacles in their way." ~ Rose Malezer, Reader's Favorite

By Lynda Dickson
Chompy tries making Chompy Juice, but something's just not right. Meanwhile, Salty reveals that he found a cryptic note at Peppa Mansion. So, they head back to the haunted mansion to see if they can find a hidden treasure and, hopefully, the real secret behind making Chompy Juice. But someone else is following them ...
Once again, the author shows her talent in creating a spooky atmosphere with her careful choice of words. Young readers will be amused and frightened at the same time, as Chompy goes on another exciting adventure and someone is taught a lesson. I hope the author takes the opportunity to incorporate some nutritional messages in future books in this series.

By Lynda Dickson
It's Spud's first day at a new school, and nothing is going right. Feeling like a laughing stock, he runs off into the woods - and accidentally becomes a hero! Meanwhile, Chompy uses his super-powered Chompy Juice to good effect.
As ever, Candybar is the troublemaker, while Chompy saves the day. And, once again, there is some questionable behavior, as Spud climbs a ladder to peek through a window. Still, we all know what Goldilocks did! I'm sure the kids will enjoy the "butt" references! At the same time, they'll learn that it's okay to be different and that sometimes being different is a good thing.
A cute story for children ages 3 and up.
