Book Video

Excerpt
Lily Sommers sat impatiently on the crowded flight, dreading the moment when the pilot would come on the intercom and announce it was time to prepare for landing.  She wasn’t looking forward to this trip.  Not when the drive from the airport would end up in Sterling Wood.  Whenever she went home, it was stepping back in time from the fast, hectic pace of her life in California. Nothing changed in Sterling Wood.  Ever. If Jesse Watson, the Sterling Wood Police Chief, had not called her day before yesterday and told her that her uncle, Jimmy Richardson, was dead, she would not have returned so soon.  The unexpected late-night phone call changed that.
Uncle Jimmy was her mother’s brother.  He lived in a rundown house a few miles down the road from where she grew up.  He loved his privacy and only came up to their house for dinner, when his sister shamed him into it.  He never stayed long afterward.  He was a recluse much of the time. The one thing she remembered about her uncle was he always had a ready smile for everyone. There wasn’t anyone in town who didn’t like her uncle.
Lily admitted she wasn’t close to him. When she was growing up, he was always on the road transporting industrial machinery to various locations in the continental United States and Canada for Xavier Metal Works, a large local company in the area.  After his road trips, he spent much of his time in McHenry’s Pub or looking for General Braddock’s Gold, a futile quest her father believed her uncle was obsessed with.
As her father told it, for more than a hundred years, fortune hunters had been trying to find the gold General Braddock and his men buried along the Allegheny River while on their way to fight the Indians during the French and Indian War.  What General Braddock didn’t know, was the riverbank where they supposedly buried the gold was the Youghiogheny River, not the Allegheny River which was the intended burial site. That location was thought to be the most likely burial, although there were others in Maryland and Virginia. The gold was never found, and the story of the treasure became an urban legend.
But not to her uncle. He extensively studied the legend and kept a journal of his activities.  Each failed attempt ended with him drowning his sorrows at McHenry’s Pub, a local watering hole, where Jesse would find him and bring him home.
Her father used to tell her about Jimmy’s exploits every time she came home. He complained that Jimmy was seeking a treasure that would never be found, and he should be doing more productive things with his time.  Despite it all, her father loved Jimmy and they were close.
First thing tomorrow morning, Lily planned to go to Sullivan’s Funeral Home and get all of the arrangements made.  She wanted to get the service over with as soon as possible.  She hated funerals and all the hoopla that went with them.  The endless condolences, the casseroles, and cakes she’d never eat.  Not to mention, the lofty sermons and mournful songs that tore at her soul.  She wanted none of it, but tradition dictated that she grin and bear it.

Description
Loving him is easy.
Fearing him is necessary.
Trusting him could be a deadly mistake.
Born deaf and living with an anxiety disorder, Brooke Hartley manages life in five-minute intervals. It’s all she can do to get out of bed each morning. She’s hidden inside her sister’s apartment for over a year.
Everything changes when Brooke’s sister goes missing. Her fragile world crashes. She is desperate to find her, and she’ll need help.
Haunted by a past he needs to forget, Scott Derrico keeps to himself until his gallery manager, Autumn Hartley, suddenly disappears. He is forced out of his isolation to help a woman that needs him with a terrifying intensity.
Scott tries to deny his attraction to Brooke. He doesn’t want to get emotionally involved but he craves her like nothing else. And, for her, he is a dark and sexy diversion to overcome her fear.
With a genuinely flawed and relatable heroine and a mysterious and protective hero, you won’t want this love story to end. You’ll beg … for another five minutes …

Excerpt
Scott stopped so he could stare at Autumn’s sister. He’d forgotten—again—that she was coming. Maybe if he’d remembered, he would have been more prepared.
Brooke was absolutely beautiful.
Her eyes met his, and he couldn’t look away. Those large, gorgeous eyes held him in place better than steel bars could have. He could stare at those eyes for the rest of the day, or week, or longer.
He suddenly remembered his manners. He’d told Autumn he would make this easier for her. He forced a polite smile, completely aware his behavior was not going unnoticed.
With a pointed stare, Autumn stepped toward him. “What’s wrong? And don’t answer where she can see you. She reads lips.”
He turned sideways, away from Brooke, opened his mouth to respond, and shrugged instead.
“Did you change your mind about her working here?”
“No, of course not.”
“Okay. So why are you looking at her like that?”
Again, he shrugged. What was he supposed to say? Sorry, but I don’t want to have the hots for your sister. You should have told me she was so beautiful.
“Oh,” she said, her eyebrows lifting.
Oh? What the heck did she mean by that?
“You realize I have a picture of my sister on my desk, right? It shouldn’t be a surprise to you that she’s pretty.”
He hadn’t noticed the picture. Obviously. And, she was way more than pretty.
Her look of surprise suddenly changed. “Scott, don’t you dare make a move on my sister. I mean it. That’s the last thing she needs right now.”
“That won’t happen.”
“Good. Now, please turn back around and say hello. I want her to feel welcome.”
Right. He turned back, shoved his hair away from his face, and instantly went right on staring. “Hey. Welcome to the team.”
Was that his voice? It was much softer than normal. He had to snap out of this.
She gave such a small smile that he wondered if he imagined it.
Had she understood what he’d said? Maybe he hadn’t spoken slowly enough?
He looked back to Autumn to make sure she wasn’t still glaring at him. She was. Oh hell. He walked away to his studio. This day was not going to get any easier.

Praise for the Book
“This is a stunningly original novel, well written and tense enough to satisfy the most finicky suspense story lovers. Highly recommended.” ~ Grady Harp
“This story caught me and would not let go! The instant attraction between Brooke and Scott was great but not the only pull in this story. I had to know what happened, who did it, and could not stop turning pages. […] From Brooke's past tragedies to the current situation, I enjoyed the entire package. I highly recommend this story.” ~ Christine Woinich

My Review
I received this book in return for an honest review.

By Lynda Dickson
Brooke is deaf and suffers from anxiety - to the point where she can’t leave the apartment she shares with her twin sister Autumn. Scott is an artist who employs Autumn as his gallery manager and who struggles with his own internal demons. When Autumn disappears suddenly, Brooke and Scott team up to find her. In the process, two damaged people might just become whole again.
The story is told alternately from the points of view of Brooke and Scott in the third person. I had trouble keeping up with whose head I was inside and would have preferred if the story was told in the first person. The author vividly evokes Brooke’s feelings of anxiety with descriptions such as this one: “She drowned in the fear. That was what it felt like. There was no air, no escape, no help, no hope.” Her inability to speak is handled skillfully, although her thoughts and signing become confused towards the end, as they are both italicized.
Brooke’s and Scott’s sudden, intense attraction to each other may sound unbelievable to some, but I know from experience that feelings can develop that quickly. The thing I did find unbelievable – especially given her anxiety disorder - was that Brooke was willing to become intimate with Scott while she was so worried about her missing sister. I was disappointed that Scott admits he fell in love with Brooke because she’s so beautiful. I also wasn’t a fan of his nickname for Brooke: “little girl”. While the quick pace will keep you turning the pages, it feels like everything is wrapped up a little too quickly in the end.
A real page-turner.
Warnings: domestic violence, sexual references, sex scenes, graphic violence.

Excerpt
He wasn’t as much shocked by his physical reaction as by the fact that it happened at all. For a long time now, he’d managed to keep a clamp on his sex drive and take it out only when required, like taking aspirin for a headache.
“You’re a smart woman,” he congratulated her. “I didn’t know if you’d play along with me.”
She inhaled an unsteady breath and blew it out. “I took a chance. You could have been worse than they were.”
“Still, that shows brains and quick thinking. Good for you.” He studied the interior of her car. “Wow. They did a number with that window. Don’t move. There’s chunks and pebbles everywhere.”
She stared at him, studying his face. “You promise you aren’t the second wave? You know, like good cop, bad cop? The bad guys threaten me and you come along and win my confidence by helping me?”
“Nope. Scout’s honor.”
“I, uh, saw that you have a gun.”
“So did those jackasses. I wanted them to see it.” He smiled at her. “But I only use it as part of my job.”
She caught her lower lip in her teeth. “They just came at me out of nowhere and ran me off the road. Then they boxed me in and smashed the window.”
“Later I’ll want all the details. Right now let’s get you out of here.”
“Do you know who they are? Those men?”
“No.” His voice hardened. “But I know other garbage like them.”
She swallowed. “So who are you, anyway?”
“Oh. Sorry.” He winked at her, and the tension in her body visibly eased. “Logan Malik. Savior of women in danger.”
“Devon Cole.” She dug up a smile. “Woman in danger who needed saving.”

Praise for the Book
"Not a cookie cut out of the usual lesfic romance fair, I know this one will stick out as one to remember." ~ Shabba
"I loved the story of Jessie and Fran." ~ Sandra
"Fran is one of the most memorable and unique heroines in recent memory - tattooed, pierced, brusque - so indifferently talented, so emotionally damaged. The novel's strength is the slow-burn way in which two people, opposites in almost every way, slip past formidable walls to fall in love despite everything. It was enthralling to see Jessie, the ultimate color-between-the-lines person, helpless against her feelings for Fran, and likewise for Fran, who, in an attempt to hide away from the world, discovers herself in Jessie. This is not a glossy, superficial romance; but I think that the rich characterization makes the ending all the more resonant." ~ MW
"Where to start! I guess I'll start with Fran, my heart broke for her and all that she's had to endure in such a young life. I really applaud Wendy Temple for being able to capture that raw emotion that rages through Fran in her daily struggles with addiction too. I also loved that Jessie stuck by her and didn't take the easy way out by walking away. This is the first time I've read a book by Wendy Temple but I can't wait to read more." ~ Ozgrl
"Wendy Temple has written a fantastic story that deals with a relationship full of difficulties and turmoil but she also managed to make it joyful and incredibly sexy too. Jessie’s life is safe and ordered and meeting Fran has made her re-evaluate all she thought she knew. Fran is a complicated and apparently anti-social individual. Once we delve into her background we realise there is so much more to her and I really grew to admire her. The setting of Portobello in Edinburgh was interesting and I even found myself rooting for their team. I highly recommend it." ~ Kitty Kat

About the Author
Wendy Temple
Wendy Temple’s first love has always been sport. She kicked a football as soon as she could walk. At school, girls weren’t allowed to play football, so she played hockey instead. Hockey became her go-to sport for many years, but she played five a side football as often as she could/was permitted!
Wendy also loves music and from a young age got into punk. She remembers watching the Sex Pistols on the BBC news and her mum and granny being appalled. Wendy was ten and thought they were amazing.
Wendy believes that sport and a good family saved her from a life on the fringes of society. At age fifteen she was experimenting with drugs and skipping school. She failed all her exams apart from English. It was her love of sport that had her returning to school to re-sit exams and try again.
Upon leaving school Wendy studied physical and community education. After college she became a youth worker, running sports clubs, after school clubs and youth clubs. Working for an orthotics company inspired her to go to university to study Occupational Therapy – providing invaluable insight into physical and mental health, including addiction, which is one of the major themes in Defensive Mindset.
Wendy has spent most of her life in Edinburgh bar a couple of months in London. For her, Edinburgh is a city that can feel like a town: "It’s cosmopolitan, quaint and steeped in history, an ideal setting for any story," says Wendy, which explains why Defensive Mindset is based in Portobello, Edinburgh!
