From the moment I
read the first chapter of Herbert Kelley's Black
Clover, I knew I was going to have a hard time putting it down. Being
introduced to a young man at the time in his life when he has his first sexual
experience, which eventually leads to a full blown addiction, was a sure way to
draw me in. Hearing Damon Green describe his sexual escapades brought this
urban fiction book of erotica to life.
While much of the
book is focused on Damon's struggle to control his addiction, we're also
introduced to a number of characters who help fuel his flame, namely Freda, the
woman of his "dreams," and her cougar mother, Penny. Although Damon
tries to resist the feminine wiles of this mother/daughter duo, they seem to
possess a certain power over him that only they have control of. Ultimately, as
with all of us, it is up to Damon to dig deep within himself to find the
strength to keep his temptations at bay.
Kelley is superb at
developing major characters and drawing the reader in through extreme detail in
the use of urban terminology, legends, and experiences. This work of fiction
reads like an autobiography and at times I found myself wondering if it might
truly be about the author himself (although he assures me it is complete
fiction). My heart ached for Damon when he revealed his relationship with his
mother and I have to wonder if that is not the driving factor behind his
addiction. Kelley did a great job keeping me interested and longing for more.
I'm expectantly awaiting the sequel!.

Hi Herbert. Thanks for
your generous donation to our giveaway and thanks for joining me today to
discuss your book Black Clover:
Desecration of Purity.
I live in Australia
and hadn't heard of "Urban Fiction" until now. Can you please explain
what it is?
Urban
fiction, also known as street lit, is a literary genre set, as the name
implies, in a city landscape; however, the genre is as much defined by the
socio-economic realities and culture of its characters as the urban setting.
The tone for urban fiction is usually dark, focusing on the underside of city
living. Profanity, sex, and violence are usually explicit, with the writer not
shying away from or watering-down the material.
When did this genre
come to the forefront?
Urban
Fiction has been around since Hip Hop started, but it gained more popularity
over the past 15 years.
Who are the most
influential writers in this genre?
There
are so many of them it's hard to say.
What sparked the idea
for this book?
The
inspiration was observing people that had an addiction to lust and watching
different triggers unfold to ruthless needs because of tragic factors in their
lives.
Which comes first? The
character's story or the idea for the novel?
The
idea for the book came first, then I created the characters.
What was the hardest
part about writing this book
The
hardest part about writing the book was I felt I was transforming in the a
certain character in which I had to do a reality check.
How many books do you
have planned for this series?
This
book is part of a three book series.
How long did it take
you to write this book?
It
took about two months to write this book including writers block.
What is your writing
routine?
About
4 am I get up and fix a hot cup of coffee and do some research. Then I will
look over my previous writing and start writing my new material.
What advice do you
have for someone who would like to become a published writer?
Keep
your confidence up and never take no for answer.
What do you like to do
when you're not writing?
When
I am not working, I like hanging out at the gym and listening to music.
What does your family
think of your writing?
Everyone
loves my writing. I do not let my mother read my work. She is extremely
religious and that is how I was brought up. I do not think she would approve of
what I write about.
Please tell us a bit
about your childhood.
I
grew up in the ghetto in Dallas. Times were tough but we survived. I played
sports in school. I went to church frequently with my family. In my spare time
we played marbles.
Did you like reading?
Yes, I do.
When did you first
realize you wanted to be a writer?
When
I could come up with stories so easily and they sounded so realistic. That is
when I realized I had an imagination to be reckoned with.
Did your childhood
experiences influence your writing?
No.
What was your favorite
book?
The Girl
with the Dragon Tattoo,
because I love books with a lot of different characters.
What can we look
forward to from you in the future?
In
the future you can look forward to two more parts of the Black Clover Series. The
next Black Clover book is written. I will release it at the end of this year. Part
three is written as well. I might let the readers decide on an alternate
ending. At the moment I'm writing a memoir of my mother's life.

About the Author
Herbert Kelley is from Dallas, Texas. He is an entrepreneur who has
studied Telecommunications. Herbert started writing in his mid-thirties and
realized that this was very comforting to him. He published his first book, Snitching:
The Forbidden Story in 2007. In 2011, he started writing the explosive
Black Clover Series which broadened his imagination to horizons of which he
could never have dreamed. Desecration
of Purity is Volume 1 in a three-part series. Volume 2 will be released
at the end of 2013. Herbert is currently working on his mother's memoir.
