Description
The tale of an epic warrior torn between the power of the sword and her longing for a peaceful life.
A young woman with a kind heart and extraordinary constitution, Rose becomes a warrior to better the world. Despite the wealth and fame she wins as one of the greatest champions of her time, the bloody reality of her new life is nothing like her ideal dream. She yearns for a chance to escape the violence.
She finds that chance in Ethan, the leader of an altruistic pacifist group. But when a barbarian horde invades their kingdom, Rose knows that she can make a difference by taking up her sword again. Will her need to protect her homeland cost her the man she loves?
Iron Bloom is a full length novel intended for both adults and older teens. It is the first in the Iron Flower series.

Excerpt
It was the glint of sun off steel that caught her eye.  Rose stopped, basket of freshly picked herbs in hand, and stared into the Whit family's barn door through which she had seen that misplaced sliver of light.  While metal was common enough on a farm, most farming tools were made of dull iron, and Rose had only seen light reflected so sharply off honed steel—like a sword blade.  Inside the barn, she thought she glimpsed a bulky shape, moving with stealth and speed.  A thief?
Her first thought was to run for help.  But how long would it take to get back?  Likely too long, for the Whits.  She should go warn them, she thought.  Yet she worried to let the burglar out of sight, and perhaps give him a chance to catch her off guard later.  What if the Whits weren't home?  If so, she would have to confront him alone anyway.  She would not escape herself only to leave him here, free to ambush her neighbors.
Rose set her basket down in the grass and crept towards the barn, knowing now what she meant to do.  It wasn't that she wasn't scared; her heart pounded in her chest, and sweat moistened her scalp and tunic.  Though she had long played at being a warrior with her friends, to confront real danger was an altogether different matter.  But she would do all she could to protect the Whits and their innocent child.  So she entered the barn, carefully picking up the hoe just inside the door.
The man's broad back came into view to her left, and Rose raised her hoe to strike.  Then she hesitated.  What if this was no thief, after all?  Despite his armament, he could be a family friend, or even an agent of the crown on legitimate business.  She could not just attack, with no knowledge of his intentions.
"You!" she said in what she hoped was a commanding voice.  "What are you doing here?"
He turned, and immediately she realized her mistake.  The feral gleam in his eyes, the smirk that pulled at his thick lips—he could be nothing else but the kind of villain she had suspected and feared.  "Are you the daughter, then?  A big one you are, but I don't mind.  All women scream the same."  His huge sword came up, gleaming like flame.
On the verge of panic, Rose swung at his face.  He parried easily, and countered with a slash she barely managed to deflect.  The hoe was poorly balanced for use as a weapon, and she was hardly an experienced warrior in the first place.  The robber pressed his assault, battering relentlessly at her, and she found herself retreating across the hay-strewn floor.  She felt her back bump up against the far wall, and in desperation tried to force him back with a sudden burst of offense.
For a moment, he seemed to falter against her flurry of quick pokes, and she thought she had a chance.  But then he cut through the hoe's shaft with a well-placed blow, and the next thing she knew an impact like a heavy punch slammed into her middle.  She felt herself shoved back, driven against the wood behind her.  Then the pain hit, a world-shattering explosion tearing through her body.  For a moment she was blind, but stubbornly she blinked her vision back.  Slowly, her attacker came into view.
Rose stared at the man as he loosened his belt, his wide, greasy face split with a lusty grin.  His breath reeked of rotting meat, and she ached to run screaming out of his reach.  But she couldn't scream because her mouth had filled with blood.  And she couldn't run because his sword impaled her just below the ribcage, nailing her to the wall.

Review
Young Rose only sixteen years old, longs to escape her violent world. She also yearns to become a warrior, even though a woman especially as young as her, is unheard of. The bloody reality of her new life is not quite what she thought it would be. Then she meets Ethan.
When Barbarians invade her Kingdom she knows exactly what she must do. She fights with a vengeance to save her homeland, but at what cost?
Fast paced, a lot of action and graphic fights. If you love a strong female lead with many bloody fights, then this is the book for you. I intend to check out more or Billy Wong's work.

"Gothic Genesis (Tales of the Gothic Warrior)" by Billy Wong

NEW RELEASE
Gothic Genesis
(Tales of the Gothic Warrior)
by Billy Wong

Description
This series is meant to be unrealistic fun. If complete believability is a must, it might not be for you... but if you like the sound of a non-magical female brawler standing toe to toe with huge men and monsters in brutal fistfights on sheer toughness and badassery, maybe it is.
After beating up a player from a rival football team, high school sports star Freya finds herself under investigation for his disappearance. Resolving to find him and clear her name herself, she teams up with psychic outcast Annabeth on a quest that will start a great friendship and change her life forever.
A short story. Prequel to the Gothic Warrior series.

Excerpt
Freya lay beneath the huge pasty boy, trying to blink her vision back through the continued hail of punches to her cheek and jaw.  She had challenged the star linebacker of a rival high school football team to a fight outside a closed gas station after he purposely injured her teammate, only to be surprised by his sudden attack while she tried to take off her jacket.  She remembered being blindsided by a stunning uppercut, saying "oh" weakly and slumping to the pavement before their schoolmates as her limbs lost all power.  She had to rally and fight back, but couldn't find the strength.  Her body was nearly limp, and when Bobby the linebacker saw her head loll to the side, he halted the assault.
"Don't stop," she mumbled through torn lips.  "Keep hitting."  If he let up, it would look like she had lost the fight.  Even now, she couldn't accept that.  She still told herself, in a tiny whisper at the back of her head, that she could come back.
He resumed pounding her, making her eyes water and blood spray from her mouth.  Warm liquid dripped from his fists back onto her face from which it'd come.  "Why don't you give up?" he asked pleadingly.  She could tell he hit her as hard as he could, but didn't want to.  He did it out of respect for her wishes, for which she felt grateful.  She didn't need his mercy.
Finally summoning a surge of energy, she grabbed his waist and rolled him over so that their places were reversed.  Now she hammered punches into his doughy face and he gaped in awe of her recovery and strength.  He raised his forearms to shield himself, and immediately she took the opportunity to snatch one of them, wrap her legs around and try for an armbar.  Bobby's elbow started to pop, and he cried out in pain.  He rolled so that he crouched over her, one arm still trapped, and punched down with his free hand.  Shot after loud shot landed, and she lost her grip.  She clawed at his eyes, but he blocked the attempt and continued to batter her.  Her face an indistinct mass of pain, she turned to her side and curled up in a fetal ball.  Honoring her earlier request, he kept striking.
"Stop!" a high female voice said.  "She's hurt!  Look at her body language, it's saying she surrenders!  She's helpless..."
That got Freya's fire burning.  She threw an elbow up from her side and caught Bobby right on the chin.  He grunted and dropped to his hands and knees over her.  "Don't presume to speak for me," she spat at the small girl who had spoken.  She wore all black—black hair, black shirt, black pants, black makeup, black boots, black fingerless gloves.  Annabeth the antisocial goth.  They'd gone to the same school since junior high, but never interacted much.
"Sorry.  I just had a premonition someone would be in big trouble."
Premonition?  Who even talked like that?  Freya scooted out from underneath her opponent and threw her legs up around his neck.  "You mean someone like Bobby?  I was just enjoying the face massage."
Her real name was Star, no thanks to her hippie mom, but everyone called her Freya after a video game character known for being overpowered.  She possessed more strength and toughness than any teenage girl she knew, and most adults.  And she was considered the greatest warrior... of her high school.

"Best in the Elf-ing World (Tales of the Gothic Warrior)" by Billy Wong

Best in the Elf-ing World
(Tales of the Gothic Warrior)
by Billy Wong

Description
Lighthearted (but violent) fantasy action featuring one butt-kicking heroine.
When the world's greatest mixed martial arts fighter challenges goth singer and ultimate brawler Freya to a match, she eagerly accepts the chance to battle a legend. To her surprise, she soon receives an offer of training from an otherworldly visitor. What she doesn't know is that her elvish benefactor has plans for her beyond just a celebrity cage fight.
A short story. Fourth chronologically in the Gothic Warrior series, but the stories do not have to be read in order.

Excerpt
Freya sat in the corner of her band's studio, nostalgically watching the fantasy movie they had made based on her.  While not completely true to life, the over the top action reminded her of treasured memories.  After the evil billionaire Frederick Gamer was imprisoned for murder, she had come to almost regret turning him in.  Sure, he deserved it for running an illegal fighting tournament with the goal of having fighters torn apart by his pet.  But she secretly dreamed of receiving an invite to participate in such a tournament again.
She was still in her early twenties, yet felt somewhat old and jaded knowing there might be few worthy challenges left in the world for her iron fists, which had spelled the lizard-ape's doom.  She hugged her sword Empty Blue close to her.  An oversized prop used in music videos, the great blunt blade hid a live one that had killed a demon before.
"Oh Empty Blue," she whispered, woozy with drugs and drink, "sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I lived in a world of dragons and elves like the ones that inspired you."
"Freya, what's wrong?" her psychic bandmate Annabeth asked, seeing her glum look.  "You look sad."
"I'm fine.  I just haven't had a good fight in a while.  Life gets boring when you're not being challenged."
"Then I might have good news.  I had a dream you're about to have a great battle."
She sat up.  "You mean like a vision-dream or a something-on-your-mind-dream?"
"A vision I think."  Annabeth frowned.  "But I wish you'd grow up and stop wanting to fight.  You're always getting hurt so bad."
She'd taken four assault rifle bullets from Frederick Gamer's men.  But she had still kicked the asses of the lizard-ape and a dozen guards.  "It's not that bad for me.  I'm the Gothic warrior you know."  She stumbled up out of her seat.  "And since the Gothic warrior's about to get a decent test again, I say we girls go out and celebrate."
"Are you sure you should do that?  You're already all drunk and drugged up."
"So you can watch over me and keep me safe, Annabeth."
The smaller goth girl sighed, knowing she couldn't be denied.  They got in Freya's car, Annabeth driving, and headed out.
#
Later that night, Freya sat feeling sluggish at her favorite bar.  She threw back another shot of absinthe and wondered if Annabeth was enjoying her dance with that fanboy who had bothered her.  She heard footsteps approaching from behind.  "Annabeth you sound heavy.  Are you drunk?  Better not be."
"I'm not Annabeth," a cool voice said.
Freya glanced back.  A big blonde woman stood behind her, maybe five ten, five eleven.  She wore ample clothes, but seemed pretty sturdy underneath that jacket and sweatshirt.  She was in her late twenties, or maybe early thirties, and her face looked to have been on the receiving end of quite a few brutal beatings.  "And who's you?"
The woman didn't favor her with an answer.  Instead she asked, "Do you think that you're the strongest girl in the world?"
"I don't know.  Haven't had the pleasure of meeting every other girl.  But I'm probably the strongest who's somewhat well known."  Not a lot of females could snap the back of a gorilla sized lizard-ape over her knee or take dozens of punches and knees from giant men, after all.
"How quickly people forget."  The woman sat beside her.  She did look kind of familiar, now that Freya thought about it...  "Bartender, remote."

"Bad Milk (Side Stories of the Iron Flower)" by Billy Wong

Bad Milk
(Side Stories of the Iron Flower)
by Billy Wong

Description
Bad Milk is an heroic fantasy tale featuring the indestructible female warrior known as the Iron Flower.
When an insanity epidemic afflicts bandits and wealthy merchants alike, well-scarred Rose's investigation sends her on an awkward journey into a temple of beauty.
This short story was previously published in Afterburn SF. It is a side story in the Iron Flower series and takes place after the events of Iron Bonds.

Excerpt
Big Rose watched the obese giant jump up from his seat with a scream, knocking over his chair so that it thudded down behind him.  He continued to shout as he turned to and fro, swinging massive arms like a maddened bear.  Patrons scrambled from their seats around him and scurried away, too late for one couple drenched by the mugfuls of ale his flailing launched through the air.  The male victim cursed at him, and behind him the barkeep ducked to retrieve a stout club from beneath the counter.
Rose frowned, bouncing her leg up and down under her corner table while she struggled over her course of action.  She had seen innumerable bar fights, and participated in no few.  Her involvement here could make the difference between someone getting seriously hurt or not.  But, far from home and without her braggart husband at her side, today was a rare time she got to enjoy a drink in peace without being recognized.  So she sipped at her bowl of whiskey and waited, hoping things would not escalate.
The behemoth slammed huge fists down on his table, causing it to split and crash down in pieces.  Rose bit her lip; it would have taken considerable force to do that.  The barkeep stepped in front of him, talking to try and calm him.  A backhand sent him sprawling as blood sprayed from his nose, and Rose stood.
The giant advanced on the stunned man, who two waitresses rushed to aid.  One woman tried to drag the barkeep away, while the other brave girl grabbed his attacker in an attempt to restrain him.  He flung her away and into a bunch of chairs.  A youth ran to aid her, while two friends stepped towards her assailant.  His hands shot out in a flash and cracked their skulls together.  One fell, senseless at best; the other stood reeling, defenseless against the fist drawn back to end him.
"Enough!" Rose said as she caught the haymaker in her hand, a powerful blow but no more so than one of her husband's.  She squeezed, relatively calm if resigned to unwanted attention later.  Few men even of his size could match her strength, and she expected him to be incapacitated by pain.  But when his glazed eyes met hers, she saw something she had rarely encountered off the battlefield - the madness of a berserker rage.  No wonder he didn't speak.  Nor did he show any regard for the crushing pressure on his hand, and before Rose could adjust to this surprise his other fist smashed into her face.

"Gothic Gladiator (Tales of the Gothic Warrior)" by Billy Wong

Gothic Gladiator
(Tales of the Gothic Warrior)
by Billy Wong

Description
Light-hearted (but violent) fantasy action with one butt-kicking heroine.
After winning her spot from a seven foot kickboxer, goth singer and self styled Gothic warrior Freya enters an evil billionaire's underground fighting tournament. She finds herself right at home battling aristocrats, sumos, thugs, ninjas and psycho killers for the title of "greatest in the world." But what will she face if she makes it to the final round against the mysterious Grand Champion?
A novelette. Third chronologically in the Gothic Warrior series.

Excerpt
To anyone watching not in the know, it would have looked like Freya was being severely bullied by seven foot two motorcycle gang leader Chase Young.  Chase's resume had it all—ex-college basketball star, war hero, survival expert, professional kickboxer.  Right now, he had his hands around Freya's neck, choking her suspended in midair over the junkyard as a crowd of his crude biker buddies watched.  But in reality Freya Blackstar, lead singer of goth metal band Helbound and self-styled Gothic warrior, was loving every second of this.
His grip weakening from her kicks to his arms, Chase walked forward and slammed her down on the hood of a car with deafening force, creating a huge dent.  She cried out in pain, but recovered almost instantly and kicked him away.  "You dented my car!  Now I'm going to kick your ass!"  She peeled her mere five foot seven body off the hood and stood.  Already one of her infamous fingerless "battle gloves" was ripped off and blood covered half her face, but she bounced up and down lightly.  "Get ready big boy!"
She rushed forward, swinging for the fences.  Chase missed with a punch and absorbed several thunderous hooks to the body, each one cracking ribs and driving the breath from him.  Desperately he grabbed her by the hair and dazed her with a knee to the chin.  He stepped back and kicked her full force in the face, making her do a involuntary backflip.  Freya got her hands beneath her and tried to push up, drooling blood.  Her arms gave out.  She flopped face down in the dirt, one arm at her side, the other stretched out to her right.  The fingers of her left hand twitched a bit and were still; her eyes slowly closed, and blood began to pool around her mouth.
Chase backed off, hugging his middle.  "Oh, come on!  I know you're faking with that overdramatic collapse!  You think I haven't seen your stupid videos?  You want me to start beating on your 'corpse' so you can make your epic comeback."  She didn't move.  He stepped forward and nudged her right fist with his foot, but quickly pulled back.  "Fine then.  If you want to just keep lying there, we'll just say you lost."
Freya shook her head, got up and wiped her bloody lips.  "So you figured out my game, good for you.  But if you don't play it, that'll just make me mad."

Review
It's a good read. The characters are engaging and the story is riveting. I could not wait to find out what happened. Some of the dialogue has some offensive language so beware if you are sensitive to swear words. The story is great though and the characters keep you engaged in what is going on and sitting on the edge of your seat.
