"Cossacks in Paris" by Jeffrey Perren

Cossacks in Paris
by Jeffrey Perren

Cossacks in Paris is an historical fiction and romantic adventure set in the Napoleonic era. The hero in this novel, Breutier, was inspired by a real solider who participated in the Battle of Paris in 1814 and ended up chased by Cossacks during the conflict.
Cossacks in Paris is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Paris, fought March 30-31, 1814. US readers can also enter the Goodreads giveaway for a chance to win an autographed paperback copy (closes 20 April).
Jeffrey is also the author of Death is Overrated and Clonmac's Bridge (read my previous blog post).

Description
How far will one man go for love and freedom?
Rebellious Breutier Armande, a rising young civil engineer in Paris, is drafted into the Grande ArmeƩ on the eve of Napoleon's 1812 Russian campaign. His must carry out espionage mission in St. Petersburg, where he meets Kaarina, a Finnish mathematician and daughter of the counselor to Tsar Alexander I.
The pair soon fall in love - but Kaarina is betrothed to Agripin, a vicious Cossack and a favorite of the Tsar. When she refuses him, Agripin kidnaps her, aided by Kaarina's envious twin sister, Kaisa, and a battle is set between the two men. Breutier deserts Napoleon's army and faces prosecution for treason. Dodging the vengeance of the world's most powerful rulers sends him on a perilous quest to hunt down the era's most ruthless Cossack.
Interweaving the characters' personal dramas with the historical wars in Europe of the following two years forms the core of the story. The novel climaxes at the moment when, for the first time in 400 years, foreign armies invaded France, leaving behind Cossacks in Paris.

Excerpt
Breutier stood panting in a corner outside the palace, nestled between some holly bushes and a wall just higher than his head. It was not a safe place to hide for very long, he knew. It would take only a single guard to glance down the length of the wall and he would unquestionably be spotted. There were many possible hiding spots around the grounds, but between the nighttime weather and lack of water he wouldn't last long. He had to assume orders had been given not to let him pass any gate, and he couldn't possibly scale the surrounding wall.
He looked around, hot for an escape route.
Then his view landed on a pipe running up a wall to the third floor. He estimated it to be about twenty meters further from where he thought the library was. From the design, he guessed it was of French design. Engineers from Europe had been working in Russia for over a hundred years, but this pipe was new. Obviously, someone had installed indoor plumbing recently in at least one part of the palace. And he had a hunch who had suggested it. He used the pipe to climb the wall.
The moisture on the pipe made the climb difficult, but he had good toe holds from the wall brick. Now all he had to do was make it all the way up without being spotted from below. He had reached the second floor when on his periphery he noticed a guard rounding the corner. Fortunately, the man hadn't thought to look up to find him. Yet.
Breutier's muscles strained to hold his position while the guard sauntered away. When he rounded the other corner, Breutier scrambled the rest of the way up like a panther after a doe.
At the third floor he raised a leg sideways and just managed to get his boot's toe onto the parapet of the balcony. He wouldn't be able to hold on to the pipe and slide the other foot onto the base. All he could do was push off and hope to generate enough lateral momentum to reach.
He had to avoid going too far, since jumping off the low wall onto the balcony floor would alert anyone on the other side of the French windows. But if he didn't push hard enough, he'd tumble down the three stories to the stone below.
He took a deep breath and shoved as hard as he dared. It proved more than enough to get him onto the parapet, but too hard to prevent him falling onto the balcony floor. To soften the noise he tucked his head and rolled over onto his back.
It hadn't been soft enough. He could see a figure behind the thin curtains move toward him. He had nowhere to hide. The tall glass doors covered the entire width of the balcony.
Kaarina opened the doors as Breutier backed against the balcony rails, whipping his head left and right to seek an escape. He had no way of knowing of her attempt to block Agripin. She was Finnish and, so far as he knew, loyal to its ruling Russian regime. He spun around and looked over at the pipe, debating whether to jump for it.
"Desya, come inside, quick!" she whispered harshly.
He spun back and looked at her eyes, gray now in the fading evening light. Only the candlelight from inside illuminated the gold streaks. But he could see well enough to make out the smile beneath the concerned expression in her eyes. He moved away from the balcony's edge and into the room as she backed away from the door frame.
"My name is not Desya," he said in a normal tone of voice in French. "It's Breutier. I'm an engineer in Napoleon's army."

"Sit back and strap yourself in for a riotous, rollicking ride following appealing heroes, heroines and villains across war-torn Napoleonic Europe." ~ Peter Cresswell, Not PC
“History buffs will enjoy the setting in Napoleonic Europe. The scenes from Russia to France were well-selected and well-written thus giving a realistic picture of the times. Romanticists will enjoy the plot. Two men are chasing after one woman. Emotions and rivalry are tense. The plot is masterfully constructed.” ~ John Christmas, author of Democracy Society
"Perren's economical style moves one quickly from page-to-page while leaving little for interpretation, and everything to purposeful conquest. The reader is driven by one overriding question: will a man's passionate pursuit of a woman prove more powerful than a ruler's quest for an empire?" ~ Michael Moeller, The Atlasphere

Gemma Mayfield feels like middle school is a lot to bite off and chew. School, ballet classes, and planning on how to get Trevor Davis to ask her to the Halloween Dance are a tough balancing act. On top of that, Gemma is convinced that her science teacher, Ms. Pruett, is a witch.
When things start getting fishy at school, Gemma knows that Ms. Pruett is behind it all! Students are getting spells placed on them and start to go missing. Gemma and her best friend, Izzie, vow to stop Ms. Pruett from doing any more damage. Will they be able to save Middleton Middle School from witchcraft?

Excerpt
Okay, so something REALLY strange is going on. Boys are from a different planet, but right now a few of them at Middleton are acting like they’re from a different universe. (Wait. Does this make sense? Is there more than one universe? Ugh. Maybe I should have paid more attention last year in Astronomy.)
So, by the time I got to Ms. Pruett’s class, I had already worked myself into a super version of “I Don’t Wanna Go To Class Because I’m Creeped Out!” mode. I walked into the Science Laboratory, and I swear I felt the cold of Building 400 smack me right in the face. I’m not kidding.
Of course Ms. Pruett was at the door, acting like her sweet old lady self (ha ha, I know better), and was welcoming all the kids into the classroom. I just kept my head down and muttered a hello as I passed. Staying below the radar was the goal. Then I sat down at my lab table and shivered a bit.
Joey sat down at the table just a second later. Normally he is really loud and obnoxious, cracking jokes, and calling to the other Soccer Jocks across the room. Today he was quiet.
“Hey,” I said, trying to be friendly. I thought maybe we could commiserate on us both having spells cast on us. Joey responded with a “hey” but didn’t say much else. Hello? Was this the Joey I knew?
“So, Joey, are you feeling okay?” I asked. “You know, after yesterday…”
Joey didn’t say anything, but began writing on a piece of paper. He folded up the piece of paper and passed it to me. I gave him a questioning look. He gave me a weird look back that I couldn’t decipher. The note was as follows:
Hey Gemma,
Sorry I gave you a hard time yesterday about the “Cute Boy” list. It was kind of rude of me.
Joey
That’s when it hit me that Joey hadn’t recovered from Ms. Pruett’s spell. For me it was just temporary, like a few minutes. But Joey was acting weird. It had to be the spell.
“Um, thanks,” I said. “Don’t worry about it.” I then started taking out all my school stuff so that I could look busy and not have any more awkward moments with Joey until he felt better. He was taking longer to recuperate.
After class I headed straight down toward the lunchroom. On the way there, I saw Trevor going in the opposite direction past me. Our conversation went like this:
Me: “Hi Trevor!” (with a big smile and enthusiasm)
Trevor: “Oh, hi Gemma.” (with zombie-like attitude)
Me: “Okay, have a good lunch!”
Trevor: “Okay, thanks. Bye.”
I wondered where he was going, in the opposite direction from the lunch room when it was lunchtime. It took me another couple of moments to realize that the ONLY classroom in that part of campus was Ms. Pruett’s room. He was headed back toward Building 400!
Yikes! I turned myself around in mid-stride and turned back the way I came. I knew there was no way possible that Trevor would be going to Ms. Pruett’s. Why would anyone in their right mind be going there by themselves?
I didn’t want Trevor to think I was stalking him, because of course I would never do that. But just in case that’s what it appeared to be, I used as much stealth as possible. I walked in the shadows and stopped to peek out behind bushes and building walls. I saw him up ahead…just before he ENTERED MS. PRUETT’S CLASSROOM.
My mouth fell open, and I just sort of stared at the door for a while.
Weird things are going on here at Middleton. And I think Ms. Pruett’s behind it all!

Review
Black Cats and Ballet Slippers is an engaging novel for tween readers. The characters are well-rounded and connect with any young readers. The adventures of Gemma, Izzie and their Middleton Middle School friends truly captivate the audience.

This book blitz and giveaway is brought to you by Xpresso Book Tours.

Description
Struggling to get her life back on track after being left suddenly and inexplicably by (secret) boyfriend-not-boyfriend and boss Drake Baylor Jr., Morgan Lane searches the globe to find Drake knowing that the only way to truly live the life she’s worked so hard for is with him by her side.
Banished to Zurich, Switzerland by his father after being caught breaking the rules, Drake has nine months to get the European Division of Baylor Industries back on track. Again, he must obey the rules so that he can hopefully return to his life with Morgan and take the helm of Baylor Industries.
Everything is going according to plan as usual for Adrian Thompson who has just gotten Drake banished to Switzerland as part of his plan to get Morgan (his college sweetheart and hopefully future trophy wife) back in his life for good. With a little help from Lana Lane, Morgan’s mother, Adrian is hoping to have Morgan wearing his ring by New Year’s Eve.
After a few months of being wooed by old flame and now boss Adrian, and without so much as a word from Drake, Morgan hesitantly accepts Adrian’s invitation to join him for New Year’s Eve in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Foiling Adrian’s plan, a “chance encounter” finds Morgan back in Drake’s arms.
Will Drake and Morgan be able to overcome the distance and time that is now between them along with a few of the hurdles that life has thrown their way? Morgan and Drake are once again faced with figuring out how to start their new future together - this time not breaking the rules, only bending them.

Excerpt
Morgan
We walk into a pub not far from Drake’s house, or I guess I should say our house, and find a booth in the corner. Drake helps me out of my coat and I can see Amanda’s eyes go wide. I’m assuming it’s the sight of my baby bump that I’m no longer hiding, but as I sit down she grabs my left hand.
“Holy shit, Morgan, we really do need to catch up! Something you want to tell me?” Amanda’s ever present enthusiasm causes a few people to look up from their meals and stare, but when they realize the restaurant isn’t on fire they return back to their own conversations.
I know she is obviously talking about my wedding rings, but I figure there’s no better time like the present so with my right hand I slowly start to rub my belly and say, “Oh yeah, I know… my baby bump is really getting big isn’t it?”
“Baby? Bump? Wha…..?” Amanda says with confusion as she looks down at my belly. “You’re pregnant? I was talking about your wedding rings!”
“Oh, yeah…I’m married too,” I say with a huge smile, and Amanda throws her arms around my neck and screams. Looking up I notice that every head in the restaurant has now definitely turned towards our table.
“I leave you alone for one week and you come back pregnant and married?” She beams, and then looks over at Drake. “What did you do to my girl?” She says with a huge smile on her face as she jokingly punches his shoulder.
“I just did what I should have done the moment I saw her. I made her mine forever,” Drake says.

Review
I read several versions of this book throughout the publishing process, and I am really impressed by how it came together at the end. Similarly to Breaking the Rules, L. K. Lewis' first book, we have a great story between two lovers. The complications these two face make the story very interesting and you are always wondering where they will end up as the story progresses. We see a lot of character development in this book in particular, as Morgan is faced with decisions she must make on her own. I think this a great, quick read, and I am looking forward to what LK has for us in her next book in the series.

Character Interview with Drake and Morgan
I recently sat down with Drake Baylor Jr. and the love of his life, Morgan Lane for a candid interview discussing love, loss, and the risks they’ve taken while bending or sometimes even breaking the rules.
Morgan, after his departure you searched the globe for Drake, hoping to find him and bring him home. What made you so determined that you would find him?
From the moment we met, Drake and I have had a connection; as clichĆ© as that sounds. We tried to stay away from each other knowing what would happen if we were caught breaking the stupid rules Drake’s dad set for him. We were careless and we got caught by Adrian in Vegas. Within a matter of days my world had crumbled around me. I no longer had the job and career I had worked so hard for. Drake had dropped out of my life and I felt hopeless. Drake Sr.’s words tore right through me as he said Drake would already be off in the arms of someone else, but even as I heard them, I knew something wasn’t right. Drake Sr. tried to tell me that he had dissolved his son’s position and that Drake wanted nothing to do with me, but I still felt our connection. I knew he had been sent somewhere as a punishment, I just had to figure out where. Having nothing but time on my hands, I set out to find Drake and bring him home. It wasn’t so much that I was determined I’d be able to find him, more like I didn’t know how to move on with my life without him.
But you weren’t able to find him…
Sadly no. And I was able to find a way to continue living my life without him in it but I was devastated. I never gave up on him though, and now that I have Drake back, I never have to.
Drake, you were understandably miserable in Zurich. What kept you going during that time, and how did you manage not to repeat past behavior with women, drugs, and alcohol?
It’s not what kept me going, but who…this beautiful woman sitting right next to me. I made the selfish mistake of flying Morgan out to Vegas for the weekend. I missed her, and wanted her out there with me. If I would have kept my head down, and returned home to her when the weekend was over we wouldn’t have missed that time together. I am a big believer that what happens always happens for a reason though. Perhaps the time we spent apart reaffirmed what we already knew, which was that we wanted to be together forever. Knowing that if I stayed the course and did my job in Zurich I could be together with Morgan again kept me together and focused. Being with Morgan was all I needed to push through every day. As far as past behavior, I don’t need anything or anyone to make me feel complete. Using drugs and women in the past was my way of filling the hole in my heart left by my mother’s death and my father’s absence. Morgan makes me feel whole. She’s the only one I see. The way I dealt with things in the past is no longer on my radar.
Morgan, do you ever worry that the mistakes Drake has made in his past will come back to hurt him?
No, I’ve never worried about that. Drake has been completely open and honest with me about his past. There isn’t anything that could surface about him that I’m not already aware of. We’ve all made mistakes before and I’m so proud of Drake for turning his life around and not repeating that cycle of behavior. He lives his life determined to make each day better than the last. If any part of his past should try hurt his future I’ll be right by his side supporting him.
Drake, how did it feel reading Morgan’s emails, knowing you couldn’t answer them?
Morgan’s emails were heartbreaking. Knowing I was the one causing the pain and with just a quick email or phone call I could explain everything and put us back on the right path was soul crushing. Morgan knows what she means to me, and to see her so heartbroken that she was questioning whether or not I would come back to her was really hard to read. I appreciated her honesty though. Each email she wrote me, however hard it was to read, still renewed my focus to return to her without further breaking any rules because by writing to me, it meant she still cared.
Drake, how hard was it not to turn around when you heard Morgan calling your name in the airport in Paris?
I took that trip to Paris to get away from Zurich for the weekend and clear my head. I was missing my girl and needed to feel close to her without screwing up in any way. That is why I chose to go to Paris. Morgan loves it there and we’ve talked about spending time there together so many times that I thought a weekend in Paris would renew my focus in doing my job so I could go home to her. When I saw Morgan in the airport I felt completely gutted. I was twenty feet away from her as she walked around that mom tying her kid’s shoes. I wanted so badly to call her name, or run up to her and throw my arms around her and just hold on forever but I knew I couldn’t. Morgan knows I trust her completely. I knew she wouldn’t have told a soul that we saw each other, but even so, I couldn’t risk it. My dad was a very connected man, and it would have only taken one person to recognize me with Morgan and report back to him and it would have been over. I think it was even harder for me not to turn around that day when Morgan called my name than it was to leave for Zurich in the first place. I could hear the excitement and the sadness in her voice as she called to me. Watching her collecting her bag then hailing a cab completely defeated and heartbroken is a feeling I never want to have again.
Morgan, how did it feel to learn that Adrian lied to you and really was responsible for Drake being sent to Zurich?
Because of our history, it was a really crappy to learn Adrian had lied to me. I knew in my heart that we would never be together and that Drake has always been the one for me, but knowing that all of Adrian’s motives to get me back weren’t pure was disappointing because he’s always been a better person than that. I could go on and on about how Adrian is responsible for my separation from Drake, and how that makes him such an a-hole, but the truth is, Drake and I broke the rules. We knew the risks and we took them anyway because we love each other so much that any risk is worth it if it means we are together. Drake didn’t have to fly me out there and take such a risk, and I didn’t have to go. If we hadn’t broken the rules, we wouldn’t have been caught and it was our penance to pay. It was the worst time I’ve ever had in my life, but it brought us here today, so it was worth it in the end.
Drake, what is it that you love so much about Morgan?
You’ve been in this room the past twenty minutes right? (laughing) First of all, my girl here is a complete knockout. I get lost in her eyes daily. I have to ask her to repeat herself all the time and she thinks I’m not listening to her but the truth is, I’m so mesmerized by her beauty I completely zone out. Besides her undeniable beauty, Morgan is so bright, and determined, and she loves so fiercely. She doesn’t judge me and my faults, she loves me despite them. She has a smart mouth the fires me up like no other too. She’s the total package and I thank my lucky stars every day that she loves me just as much as I love her.
Morgan, now that you and Drake can be together as a couple out in the open, what are you looking forward to?
I’m just ready to start our life together. I’m excited to go on double dates with Amanda and Garrett, and to start crossing things off our bucket list. Drake and I both dream big, and have already started to see some of our dreams coming true and I can’t wait to live the rest of our lives as we want to. The only rules we want to live by are the ones we make for ourselves.
Drake, any final thoughts?
No, I think my girl summed it up pretty well. We have the world at our finger tips, and couldn’t be more excited to go explore. (Turns to Morgan,) By the way Babe, speaking of Amanda and Garrett, we have lunch plans with them … something tells me ours isn’t the only one we’ll be planning in the near future …

"Honor Among Orcs: Orc Saga Book One" by Amalia Dillin

NEW RELEASE and GIVEAWAY
Honor Among Orcs:
Orc Saga Book One
by Amalia Dillin

Honor Among Orcs, the first book in the Orc Saga, has just been released. This book blast and giveaway is brought to you by Masquerade Book Tours.

Description
Tolkien meets Beauty and the Beast in this new romantic fantasy by Amalia Dillin, author of the Fate of the Gods trilogy.
After nearly a decade as the king’s whipping-girl, Princess Arianna has no intention of going quietly into marriage to some treasonous noble, or serving obediently as the king’s spy until her death is more convenient. When she discovers a handsome orc, chained and trapped inside a magic mirror, Arianna cannot help but see a lasting freedom from her father's abuse.
Left to rot inside a mirror by the king, Bolthorn never imagined his prayers would be answered by a princess. Nor did he ever expect to meet so worthy a woman after knowing her father’s cruelty. He needs her help to escape the mirror before the king marches against the orcs, but all he can offer Arianna is ice and darkness in exchange for her aid.
If Arianna can free the monster behind the glass, perhaps she might free herself, as well. But once they cross the mountain, there will be no return, and the deadly winter is the least of what threatens them on the other side. Romance blossoms in this gripping fantasy adventure.

Review
This book takes an interesting tack on the standard fantasy fare of Orcs being Elves who have been twisted by dark magic to be less attractive. But in this it is only their appearance that has been changed and not the soul of them. A lot of the relationships between Humans, Orcs, and Elves is delivered in this through the relationship of Arianna and Bolthorn, a human and orc respectively. Their relationship takes center stage and in the beginning I found the misunderstandings in their actions toward each other a little overwrought, but the romantic aspect wasn't something I was looking forward going into the book.
Once the characters have realized they love each other and get into the land of Elves and Orcs we get some political intrigue that was much more to my taste and really kicked the novel into a higher gear. I like how the novel builds to its climax, but being the first in a trilogy stops it from having too much of a conclusion, but it's still a solid wrap up for the opening piece in the trilogy.

About the Author
Amalia Dillin began as a Biology major before taking Latin and falling in love with old heroes and older gods. After that, she couldn't stop writing about them, with the occasional break for more contemporary subjects. She lives in upstate New York with her husband, and dreams of the day when she will own goats - to pull her chariot through the sky, of course.
Amalia is the author of the Fate of the Gods trilogy from World Weaver Press, and recently released Orc Saga.
