Review

By Lynda Dickson
Ryan goes to the Zippety-Zoo and meets different animals with Mr McGranimals. Then Ryan gets the chance to turn into his favorite animal for one hour. Which animal will he choose and what will he get up to?
This is a delightful rhyming story which is both fun and educational. The cute illustrations by Doug Jones depict and name different animals, including some more unusual animals which children may not already know. There are also fun puzzles and giraffe facts at the end of the book. This is another winner by Julia Dweck.

"Mary had a Sleepy Sheep" by Julia Dweck

REVIEW
Mary had a Sleepy Sheep
by Julia Dweck

Mary had a Sleepy Sheep is a picture book written by Julia Dweck and illustrated by Wilson Williams, Jr. You can read my review below. You can also read about Julia's adorable Blucy in another blog post. Keep an eye out for another great offering from Julia, Humpfree: The Humpless Camel (read my blog post).

Description
"Young Mary had a little lamb.
His name was Sheppard sheep,
And everywhere that Mary went
That sheep was sure to sleep."
This is not your average Mother Goose nursery rhyme. In this hilarious parody, poor Mary has one very sleepy, slumbering, snoozing sheep named Sheppard, and Mary's mom is not happy.
Can Mary keep her sleepy sheep awake?
Young readers will laugh along at Mary's zany attempts, as she tries everything from spicy-hot fiestas to water fights. The humor is fast and fun in this easy to read rhyming adventure.

Can you find Whiskers the mouse hiding in this picture?

Review

By Lynda Dickson
Mary had a little lamb ... it followed her to school one day ... yeah, yeah, we all know that. But in this twist on the classic nursery rhyme, Mary has trouble taking her sleepy sheep Sheppard anywhere! He keeps falling asleep. So Mary buys a book called 8 Easy Ways to Wake Your Sleepy Sheep, and sets out to try them all. Will Mary achieve her goal? And what will happen if she does? Find out in Mary had a Sleepy Sheep.
Another great offering from Julia Dweck featuring another lovable animal character, Mary's sleepy sheep Sheppard (also the name of Julia's husband!). Children will have a fun time reading the rhyming story as well as searching for the tiny mouse illustrator Wilson Williams, Jr. has cleverly hidden on every page. The book also contains the true story of the original Mary, a fun activity, and a list of websites to visit.
Highly recommended.

Review

By Lynda Dickson
Walden Bear is a boy who wants to grow up to be a bear. When his teacher (ironically named Mrs. Hunter) tells him he can't, he becomes even more determined to succeed.
This is another marvelous offering from Julia Dweck. This time there is no rhyming tale, just simple yet elegant prose, bringing us the fantastic message that children can grow up to be whatever they want. The book is beautifully illustrated by Walter Carzon, whose drawings make the characters come alive. Comes complete with bear facts and a fun activity.
Remember, you can be whoever or whatever you want to be.
