"You Too?" edited by Janet Gurtler

REVIEW and GIVEAWAY
You Too?
edited by Janet Gurtler

You Too? edited by Janet Gurtler

You Too? edited by Janet Gurtler is currently on tour with YA Bound Book Tours. The tour stops here today for my review, some excerpts, and a giveaway. Please be sure to visit the other tour stops as well.

Description
A timely and heartfelt collection of essays inspired by the #MeToo movement, edited by acclaimed young adult and middle-grade author Janet Gurtler. Featuring Beth Revis, Mackenzi Lee, Ellen Hopkins, Saundra Mitchell, Jennifer Brown, Cheryl Rainfield, and many more.
When #MeToo went viral, Janet Gurtler was among the millions of people who began to reflect on her past experiences. Things she had reluctantly accepted - male classmates groping her at recess, harassment at work - came back to her in startling clarity. She needed teens to know what she had not: that no young person should be subject to sexual assault, or made to feel unsafe, less than or degraded.
You Too? was born out of that need. By turns thoughtful and explosive, these personal stories encompass a wide range of experiences and will resonate with every reader who has wondered, “Why is this happening to me?” or secretly felt that their own mistreatment or abuse is somehow their fault - it’s not. Candid and empowering, You Too? is written for teens, but also an essential resource for the adults in their lives - an urgent, compassionate call to listen and create change.

Excerpts

Praise for the Book
“It took me a while to read it completely because I could only handle it in small doses, but nevertheless, it’s a very important book and I would love to give this to any young woman I know. But I also think it’s important for adult readers like me to read because we all have had these experiences and it’s good to know we are not alone.” ~ Sahitya
“I think this is a great IMPORTANT book for young girls to read. I recognized my own experiences in several of the stories, and found strength, camaraderie and resilience. I wish this book had been around when I was a teenager.” ~ Christine Bolton
“This collection of short stories reveals a sad truth about our society where young women are still objectified, and in some cases, abused. Each story is different, but there are underlying themes that run though many of them. ‘It's the woman's fault’ is one, guilt is another, and shame. Some made me cry, some made me angry, but all of them made me aware.” ~ C. McKenzie
“This is a very powerful anthology. It's not the most pleasant read, but it's not supposed to be. The stories contain sadness, fear, anger, and betrayal. But they also convey an important message about what it means to be female in a way that is brutally honest but also optimistic. This is the first #MeToo book I've read that has been specifically targeted to teens.” ~ Pallavi
“This was a very powerful collection, and I think it should be mandatory reading for anyone and everyone.” ~ T.B. Caine

My Review
I received this book in return for an honest review.

By Lynda Dickson
You Too? is a collection of 25 essays, mostly by published authors, with an introduction by editor Janet Gurtler, who also includes her own story. “In 2018, #MeToo stories began exploding across my social media feed, bringing back memories of the harassment I experienced as a young woman coming of age in the late seventies and early eighties.” As such, she “set out to collect stories from a diverse group of writers who were willing to share their personal encounters.”
Most of the authors tell their stories for the first time in these pages, often feeling that what they experienced wasn’t “bad enough” to be included in this anthology. It’s tough reading about the verbal and physical abuse experienced by these girls (and one boy) via the words and actions of boys and men, not only because of their sex but for their color, nationality, sexual orientation, even body size. They were made to feel like they had done something wrong and were left feeling both fear and shame. They reflect on these incidents and regret not having acted at the time and reporting the behavior of their abusers. This is the message they wish to convey to the young readers who may be experiencing the same sort of abuse:
“I should have been using my voice and standing up to harassment. […] Call out harassers. Speak for those who are too afraid, and let others speak for you when you can’t. There can be consequences for harassers and predators of all types - and there should be.”
On a positive note, these women all came out stronger because of what they endured. And, guess what? Me too.
Should be compulsory reading for all teens - both girls and boys - and their parents.
Warnings: coarse language, sexual references, rape, incest, LGBTQA themes.

Excerpt
Damnit, I overslept. I wake up to the sun hitting my face and a text from my best friend Boston asking where I’m at. Boston’s going out of town for two weeks to celebrate his birthday with his dad and sister, and I was supposed to meet him in his treehouse to give him his present and say goodbye.
Be there in ten,” I write back.
“Knock, knock,” my brother Max says, opening my bedroom door gradually until half his body is in my bedroom. “You got a minute?”
Still half asleep, I close my eyes and let my head fall back on my pillow. “I’ve got ten.”
Max takes a seat on the corner of my bed. I can feel him watching me, and my suspicions are confirmed when I pop one eye open. He laughs.
“Man, you’re a wreck,” he tells me. “What’s keeping you up at night lately?”
I don’t know why, but I’m always so certain that he must know about my moonlighting as Empathy. He has a good intuition about these things. But if he did know, it would be met with so much opposition. Max is too logical. Becoming a hero is considered reckless to him. He didn’t shut up for months about how foolish the Action Team was for working without the city’s consent. He finally came around to liking them as soon as they teamed up with the Angel City Police Department.
So yeah, he’d be pissed that I’m doing this without anybody’s consent.
“What do you want to talk about?” I yawn.
“It’s about the Academy,” Max starts. He adjusts himself so he’s facing me. “Natalia, something really important is about to happen. And I need you to know what it is so that you’re prepared.”
Okay, now I’m awake. I know Max has kept in touch with some of the researchers on Project 451, I think out of hope that the government would give them more funding so they could continue the project. I’ve been dreading the day that Max informs me that we’re going back to basecamp. Please tell me today isn’t the day.
“I’ve been in touch with a few of the scientists, and it looks like--”
“There you two are.”
Max and I turn to Alyse, who’s standing in the doorway with her hands on her hips. She hates it when we “twin up without her,” as she refers to it. She already feels like the outcast since she’s the only Morales sibling that didn’t get accepted into Project 451. She was too young to apply, though. If I could go back in time, I’d gladly switch places with her. While I’m grateful for my abilities, I hated Academy. It was too competitive and strict. Eventually, I got the sense that we weren’t being trained to protect our country, but rather, to control it.
Max sighs, probably upset that our conversation has been interrupted. Despite his disappointment, he gives Alyse a cordial smile. “What’s up, Alyse?”
“Aunt Rosa’s wrangling us for breakfast,” she says, stepping further into my bedroom and plopping herself down on my bed beside Max. “She’s polling everyone on where we want to go. Prima already said, ‘wherever you wanna go is fine, Mom.’”
I laugh as I get out of bed. Alyse is really good at impersonations, I feel like I should be paying her to hear them. She used to do a flawless Mom and Dad, but we don’t do those impressions anymore.

Description
A mother’s dying wish. A son in search of answers. A fifteen-day surf odyssey with the California girl who will dare him to rethink everything.
Alone after his mother’s unexpected death, seventeen-year-old Shep leaves Texas to crash with his uncle’s family in Malibu. Before he can hang his cowboy hat, Shep learns something that blows his mind - in her youth, his hard-working single mom was a gifted surfer on her way to international fame. And her dying wish was for him to recreate the surf tour she completed when she was eighteen - the summer she got pregnant with him.
Along with his cousin Carmen (the red-blooded competitive surfer) and her best friend Samantha (the opinionated and mildly annoying beach goddess), Shep hits the road for a surf trip up and down Pacific Coast Highway. Armed with his mother’s ashes and fifteen sealed envelopes - each containing a page from her high school diary - Shep will discover a new side of the complex woman he’d only thought of as Mom, and might finally learn the identity of a man he’s never met - his father.
But each time he paddles out into the waves, a nagging question haunts him - the one he may not be ready to answer: Is he learning to surf because he wants to honor his mother’s dying wish, or running from the real reason he can’t go back to Texas - his own terrible mistake?

Excerpt from Chapter 14
From behind, the tap of the horn pulls my attention. “Down to spot nineteen,” Carmen says as they slowly pass me. “We got oceanside with hookup!”
“Score.”
By the time I reach them, the RV is parked and Carmen is already out looking over the bluff. Shep’s unloading the small grill.
“I’m gonna prepare breakfast,” he says as I walk by him to join Carmen.
“Overcast,” she says. “Small, textured surf.”
“Two footers, at best.” I track the direction of the winds. “Surfers in the water. Waiting.”
“Let’s get our boards,” she says and we immediately turn back to the RV.
“We’re going to hit the water,” Carmen tells Shep.
He freezes. “What about breakfast?”
“Priorities, Shep. Priorities,” she says then punches his shoulder.
I walk by and punch his shoulder, too. “You heard the woman.” I step inside, close the door, then pop it open again. “Don’t come in, we’re changing.”
His little ears turn red, but he still manages to tip his hat.
We quickly change. Like me, Carmen is wearing her bikini under her clothes. No point in wasting time. She’s wearing a hot green cross-back top. Very functional. Nothing worse that discovering a boob has popped out. Neither of us bothers with wetsuits. Down here, the water is outright warm.
“Ready?” she asks.
“You know it.”
We hop out and go to the rear of the RV. The board rack has been unlocked. Shep is leaning against the RV.
“Need help taking them down?” he asks.
“Do you need help milking a cow?” I reply.
He scoffs then says, “I’m gonna lock her up and join y’all on the beach.”
“Why don’t all y’all you change into your board shorts?”
He shrugs. “We’ll see.”
He disappears after we unfasten the shortboards which are ideal for the conditions. With them tucked under our arms, we march toward the walkway.
Carmen picks up her pace. Not me. The process is sometimes as wonderful as the surf. I love everything about getting ready, about studying the waves, and breathing in the scents of the ocean. Each beach has its own unique fingerprint. Also, I prefer to study the surfers that are already there and see what skill level I’m going up against. Not Carmen. The water could be bobbing with twenty pros and she’ll get right into the mix, without hesitation.
“The overcast is burning away,” she says. “The troops are sensing the shift.”
A handful of surfers, not too far from us, run into the water. “We better join them before we lose the next set of waves.”
We place our boards down. “Time for salad dressing,” she says.
Methodically we apply sunscreen. This is not suntan lotion. We’re not trying to get sexy. This is protection so we can do this for as long as we can stand upright.
“You look like a geisha.”
We both glare at Shep who saunters in. “You’d be wise to protect that pasty white skin of yours,” I say.
His face contorts and he looks down at his exposed arms. “Pasty?” he whispers.
“Yes, pasty,” I repeat.
He sets his beach chair down and drops his rucksack. “Go on then. Pass it over so I can apply some.”
Carmen throws it at him and he snatches it. The way his muscles ripple when he grabs the errant toss reminds me of the baseball game. That was awesome.
I toss a wax bar to Carmen and we kneel in front of our sea chariots. I rip it open and the sweet scent completes the sensory experience.
The sound of crashing waves pulls my focus toward the water. The ocean is awakening.
