Beware the Procrastination Demons
Procrastination is the enemy to any author. In the case of procrastination it’s better to go on the offensive rather than the defensive. Why? Because procrastination is tricky and you will already be a victim before you even know it’s in the room.
In order for us not to fall victim to the procrastination demons we must have a plan of attack. This plan includes having a schedule; a set time and place to work on our writing, this is how you go on the offense. We should just expect that procrastination is going to try and creep in, so we need to be proactive and make a firm schedule and then hold ourselves accountable to it.
Procrastination not only slows down our work, but it can actually cause our efforts to suffer because we don’t give ourselves adequate time to complete research or properly review our writing. I think it also goes without saying that procrastination is the enemy of deadlines. For some authors deadlines are already cause for stress, but when you add procrastination, it can become increasingly stressful and frustrating for even the veteran author.
Remember if we participate in procrastination we run the risk of not reaching our desired destination; the goal is to get to our writing into the hands of readers. We should hold ourselves accountable to a schedule and set daily, weekly, and monthly goals with regard to the writing, publishing, and promoting process.
Procrastination will be an enemy that we have to fight off at every stage of being an author, it does not matter if you’re a first time author or if you have been writing and publishing for years. Procrastination may even show up disguised as something else: like tiredness, fun time out with friends, or a good show on television, but do not be fooled, it’s just those procrastination demons trying once again to creep into your schedule.
We have to stay accountable and not allow ourselves to get in the habit of making excuses to do it later; later is the vehicle that procrastination travels in. Accountability puts the brakes on procrastination while at the same time fueling and giving momentum to our goals as an author.
