"Everville: The City of Worms" by Roy Huff

EXCERPT
Everville: The City of Worms
by Roy Huff

Everville: The City of Worms is the second book in Roy Huff's Everville series. Also available: Everville: The First Pillar (read my blog post) and Everville: The Rise of Mallory (read my blog post).

Description
College freshman Owen Sage has just started to understand the darkness trying to overtake Everville and the earthly realm. With the help of The Keeper and the Fron army, Owen has managed to buy some time, but new problems have already emerged, new secrets need to be revealed, and the race against time to stop Them from conquering both dimensions has only just begun. The Keeper, Owen Sage, and his friends at Easton Falls University must now battle threats from within. To do it, they must reunite with familiar creatures and join forces with new ones as they navigate their journey to the truth that awaits them in Everville.

Excerpt
Sako and Toe emerged aboveground after the meeting with The Keepers. They walked towards the direction of the Great Fron Hall, and as they did so, a faint tremble grew more noticeable along with the sound of singing and laughter.
Just before they reached the entrance, a purple and yellow marmook named Grenmar lunged towards Toe’s legs and wrapped its tiny arms and humanlike hands around him. Grenmar then proceeded to jump up as high as he could, and continually fell back down to the  ground as its large furry balloon-shaped torso made it difficult to get a good grip. Grenmar’s presence was reassuring to Toe. He picked up the marmook and petted its velvety soft, yellow oval-shaped head before setting it back down. The marmook looked up at Toe with its golf ball-sized eyes and arms stretched out like a small child, its tongue hanging out of its mouth like a dog hoping to get picked up once more, but Toe continued to walk forward. Although it was sometimes difficult to tell, the marmooks were not just pets. They were respected, and often made important contributions to Everville.
As they entered the Great Fron Hall, musicians were playing upbeat music from long-stringed instruments and shiny gourd drums. Dozens of Fron danced arm-in-arm in joyous celebration of the recent victory against Them. Like all Fron festivities, a wide variety of food was plentiful along with numerous wines and ales. An equal number of Fron were consuming the succulent treats that were filling the room with irresistible aromas, and were drinking various shades of brightly colored beverages that were spread across the tables. Toe grabbed a few morsels to snack on as they passed by some of the large trays of food.
“Sako, Toe, it’s good to see both of you. Come, sit, have a drink.”
“Ah, Kearney, likewise. It’s great to see you as well, but we have a lot to discuss,” Sako said.

Review
If you love stories about other dimensions and parallel universes, then this is definitely for you! So much detail and background, a well thought out story. University student Owen is a great main character on a perilous adventure with his friends and an army of strange otherworld creatures that just doesn't let up until the last page. I can't wait for the next adventure and really must get the first book in this series and read them in order. Roy Huff is now one of my new favourite authors!

Book Trailer

Excerpt
Ewan and Carwyn were exhausted. Ewan would let them stay for the night, but then they would have to make their descent down the mountain to the Dark Forest on their own. Carwyn took out the map that the giant had given them. He studied the map intently as did Dagda. Ewan reached over and pointed with his long, narrow finger.
“You’ll need to make it over this pass. The Dark Forest will be just beyond the pass beyond the hills.”
It was the end of a long day, and Carwyn and Dagda were so tired that they fell asleep without eating. When they awoke, the mountain dwellers made a small meal for them before leaving, then bid them farewell.

Review
This is definitely an excellent opener to a new fantasy series. I was immediately happy to discover that the author wasted no time getting to the interesting stuff. Rather than wading through pages and pages of setup, the author assumes his readers are intelligent enough to make the proper connections, and I appreciated that. Often what bores me with fantasy novels is the way the authors feel the need to over examine every detail of their world, and Roy Huff doesn't do this.
I liked the way the normal world and the imagined world were intertwined and thought the main character was refreshing. Lately I haven't found many fantasy novels with truly likable characters. I liked that this one was young, energetic and although uncertain, quickly became a good hero. I would think this novel would be of particular interest to the younger crowd, but I don't see a reason why an adult wouldn't enjoy it as well. I found this to be very good as a whole and would certainly recommend it to others. This looks to be a very promising series.
There have been a lot of books where evil waged war with good, but in my opinion, this one pulled it off better than most.

Book Trailer

Excerpt
Owen had taken The Keeper’s advice to take a break, but it wasn’t easy. He had to force himself to relax after his victory. The events that occurred in The City of Worms were a constant distraction, but spending time with his mom helped keep him from thinking about what happened and so did the change in scenery. The holiday, however, was almost over, and Owen found it increasingly difficult to prevent his mind from wandering back to The Second Pillar of Truth and the destruction that he had initiated. Despite the difficulty, it was his last weekend home, and he was determined to do absolutely nothing of consequence.

Review
The Rise of Mallory is the third installment of the Everville series (following The First Pillar and The City of Worms). Again, the author has delivered a well-written adventure that makes you want to keep reading and not put the book down. Our hero, Owen Sage, is asked to do something unbelievable to stop an evil plot to take over and destroy Everville residents as well as other species in our and other universes. A well-written plot, lots of action and twists, great characters (some even disappear), portals and even a dragon! That's all I'm saying, don't want to spoil it for anyone.
If you haven't read any of the Everville books but you enjoy sci-fi/alternate universe stories, then you really have to read these books. You won't be disappointed!
