Description
Barkery owner Carrie Kennersly follows the scent of murder to find the true culprit ...
When Carrie Kennersley, owner of a two-part bakery that serves tasty treats to both dogs and humans, learns that a local killer is being paroled, she worries that danger will come barking at her door.
Ten years ago, Mike Holpurn was convicted of murdering the first female mayor of Knobcone Heights. Now, shortly after his release, Holpurn puts the whole town on edge by yelling at the former mayor’s husband, Henry Schulzer. After Schulzer is found dead, everyone assumes Holpurn is the culprit. But Carrie thinks there’s more to the story, especially since Holpurn claims Schulzer was the one who really killed the mayor. Carrie is determined to uncover the truth, even if it means things will get ruff.

“Good morning, Carrie!” My assistant Dinah Greeley’s voice sounded even more exuberant than usual as I turned to see her close the kitchen door behind her.
“Good morning, Dinah. Happy birthday!” Was her special day the reason she seemed so jazzed? I assumed so.
“Thanks,” she said.
“Hope you don’t mind working on your day of celebration.”
“I love it,” she replied. “And I’m really looking forward to tonight.”
“Me too.” I’d already invited her to a celebratory dinner at the Knobcone Heights Resort that evening, along with my other assistants and a few more people.
Now I tossed her a big smile that matched her own but didn’t stop kneading the dough for some of my favorite carob-flavored dog biscuits, next on the agenda for me to bake.
I was standing on the Barkery and Biscuits side of the kitchen’s long, stainless-steel counter, which was divided by center shelves that separated the Barkery half of the room from the Icing on the Cake side. The kitchen was connected at the front end to both of my bakeries. Since one shop sold healthy dog treats, which I created, and the other side sold sweets for people, I kept what we baked as separate as the stores.
At six a.m., the kitchen already smelled delightful from the people treats. And, as always, I listened for any sounds from my beloved dog Biscuit, who was loose in the still-closed Barkery. But she stayed silent.
“By the way, sorry I’m a little late.” Dinah headed to the supply cabinet at the back of the kitchen and put her purse on the bottom shelf.
“That’s forgivable on your birthday,” I said. “I’ve got cookies baking already for Icing, but I’d love for you to start on the red velvet cupcakes.” They were among our most popular products for people, and I wanted to make sure we had plenty to start the day.
“Sure.” As per standard protocol, Dinah grabbed one of our long, clean aprons from a hook on the wall and put it on over her Barkery and Biscuits T-shirt and jeans. Then she spent some time washing her hands at the large sink against the wall near the door to the Barkery. Only then did she grab ingredients from the fridge and kitchen shelves. Finally, she faced me across the counter.
What did that huge-eyed, enormous grin still on her round face mean? Was she that happy it was her birthday?
Maybe so, but I suspected it was something more.
Dinah’s slight pudginess always suggested how much she enjoyed sampling our baked goods. She was a pretty young lady, and I was delighted that she continued to work for me. I’d inherited her over a year ago when I bought Icing from my dear friend, Brenda Anesco, who had to move down the mountain from Knobcone Heights to care for her ailing mother. Brenda had been very supportive of my turning half of her former shop into my Barkery.

Hi, everyone! I'm Linda O. Johnston, and my wonderful Great Escapes Book Tour continues with my visit here, to Books Direct.
I'm taking this delightful tour because my fourth to Barkery and Biscuits Mystery, Pick and Chews, has just been released. It's a sequel to Bite the Biscuit, To Catch a Treat, and Bad to the Bone
My Barkery & Biscuits Mysteries feature a protagonist who's dear to my heart, Carrie Kennersly, a veterinary technician who decides to do more with her life while keeping her initial career going part-time. In Bite the Biscuit, Carrie had just bought a friend's bakery, Icing on the Cake, and turned half of it into Barkery and Biscuits, where she bakes and sells healthy dog treats she developed as a vet tech. Of course, it's a cozy mystery series, so someone gets murdered and my amateur sleuth has to solve the crime since she's the primary suspect. Since then, she's had to solve a couple more mysteries since friends were the primary suspect.
Carrie has developed a romantic relationship with Dr. Reed Storme, a veterinarian who works at the vet clinic where Carrie still works part-time as a vet tech. He's always telling her to back off, not get involved with solving crimes because it's too dangerous.
Well, in Pick and Chews, Reed is the major murder suspect ... and guess what? He backs down, at least a bit, from chastising Carrie for getting involved. After all, she survived the other situations - and actually helped solve them.
So, is she successful this time? You can probably guess. But to find out for sure, you'll need to read the story!
Why is Carrie so special to me? Partially it's because she loves dogs - and I identify with that. It's also because she's living several dreams in her life at the same time. She still enjoys being a vet tech and continues with that career part time. She also has always wanted to be an entrepreneur, and that dream is also coming true with her new shops.
These days, I'm a full-time writer and really enjoy it. But when I started writing and getting published, I was also an attorney and practiced law at the same time. Well, not exactly the same time. I got up an hour earlier than anyone else in my household so I had some writing time. At least I got up earlier than any of the humans. I've been owned by Cavalier King Charles Spaniels for many years, and my pups also got up to keep me company. And yes, I enjoyed practicing law, too.
In case you're not aware of it, all of my mysteries, and even romances these days, involve dogs!
I'd love to hear from you. Come visit my website and friend me on Facebook. I also blog every Wednesday at Killer Hobbies, on the 6th of each month at A Slice of Orange, on the 18th of each month at Killer Characters, and on the first Monday of each month at Under Cover of Midnight, as well as periodically on the Writers in Residence blog.

Me and My Writing
I'm delighted to be here at Books Direct to talk about Bad to the Bone, my new Barkery & Biscuits Mystery. It's the third in the series.
I write a lot. Bad to the Bone is my 45th published novel. I write both mysteries and romances, and I currently write two subgenres of romance: romantic suspense, for Harlequin Romantic Suspense, and paranormal, in my Alpha Force miniseries about a covert military unit of shapeshifters for Harlequin's paranormal Nocturne line. And, yes, another Alpha Force book will be published next month: Protector Wolf.
And right now, all my books feature dogs!
I've been doing this for quite a while, and, fortunately, I'm now a full-time writer. For many years, I was an attorney specializing in real estate law. When the economy took its last downturn I became unable to find the kinds of law projects I'd been doing for a while. Eventually, it became clear to me that I'd ramped up my writing enough that continuing to look for law jobs was impractical, and I became officially inactive as a lawyer ... and even more active as a writer!
Right now, I'm delighted to be on the Great Escapes Virtual Book Tour for Bad to the Bone. In addition to writing novels, I enjoy blogging and letting people know about my published work and just getting out there and meeting readers and other writers in person ... and virtually!
So, in case you're wondering, what's Bad to the Bone about?
Well, in the Barkery & Biscuits Mysteries, protagonist Carrie Kennersly is a veterinary technician who also gets to realize her dream of becoming an entrepreneur. She bought a friend's bakery, Icing on the Cake, and converted half of it into Barkery and Biscuits, a store that sells handmade dog treats made from healthy recipes Carrie developed for patients as a vet tech. And then she begins solving murders after being a murder suspect herself in the first in the series, Bite the Biscuit.
It's fun. It's a cozy mystery. And I'm currently writing the fourth Barkery & Biscuits Mystery
Hope you enjoy Bad to the Bone
