Description
It’s all candy cane cupcakes and peppermint coffee until you find a dead elf on your doorstep.
Only the elf wasn’t a real elf, because elves don’t actually exist – not even at Christmas time. A college student dressed like an elf decided taking a nap in sub-zero winter temps was a good idea. It wasn’t. Anna, the pink-haired baker extraordinaire of Callie’s Cakes, is convinced the student’s death was not an accident. She drags Callie and Kristie along with her as she attempts to discover who killed the elf … um … student.
Will the gals of Callie’s Cakes find the killer before Christmas is ruined?
Cupcakes not included, although you’ll find recipes for all the delicious Christmas cupcakes Anna baked.

Excerpt
“Holy cow, batgirl, these cupcakes are the bomb.” The chocolate cupcakes with buttercream frosting are decorated with red and green sparkles for the Christmas season and look absolutely scrumptious. I grab one and rip the paper liner off before shoving half into my mouth. I moan as the taste of chocolate and fluffy cream combine to create heaven in my mouth but then the heavenly cream melts and a burn replaces it. My eyes water and I start to cough. “What the heck did you put in these?” I somehow manage to ask.
“Too much?” Anna scrunches up her nose and frowns at the cupcakes as if the things have let her down.
I wave a hand in front of my face to cool the heat now spreading across my face. “Um, yeah. Just a bit.”
“Huh.” She wrinkles her nose. “The original recipe called for six teaspoons of Irish Cream in the frosting and two teaspoons of whiskey in the ganache filling. Sounded like way too little.” She grabs a pencil and starts scribbling notes on a piece of paper.
Throwing cupcakes away, anything chocolate really, is sacrilege, but there’s no way I can finish this thing. I toss the remaining cupcake in the trash with a shake of my head. “Remember,” I tell her as I walk to my office. “We don’t have a liquor license.”
I’ve nearly reached my office when Kristie pushes the swinging door into the kitchen open. “I hate to interrupt your loving on some cupcakes, but we have a problem.”
“I got this,” I shout to Anna and start to follow Kristie.
“Um, I think both of you are going to want to see this.”
Well, now she has my attention. “What’s going on?”
“You have to see it to believe it.”
I motion for her to lead the way as I follow her through the door with Anna hot on my heels. I stop when I see the room is empty. “Why haven’t you opened yet?”
“That’s what I needed to show you.” She points to the front door.
As the door is glass, I immediately spot the problem. There’s an elf sitting in front of the door, leaning his back against it while obviously passed out. I roll my eyes. Typical. This time of year brings out the drunks, which is saying a lot in Wisconsin. “I got this.”
I march to the door and unlock it. As soon as I pull the door open, the elf falls backwards. I jump out of the way, and his body lands with a thump in the doorway. Ugh. I hate dealing with drunks. Not that we get too many drunks coming to Callie’s Cakes. We are a cupcake bakery and not a bar after all. “Come on, dude. Time to move on.” I gently prod him with my foot, but he doesn’t move or make a sound. “How much did you drink?” I lean over and squeeze his shoulder. No reaction. Uh oh.

My Review
I received this book in return for an honest review.

Callie and the girls are back! This time, they investigate the murder of an elf found dead on their doorstep.
This is a quick, fun read, perfect for getting in the mood for Christmas. It comes complete with seven delicious cupcake recipes as made by Anna in the book. I can’t wait to try them!
This is the first holiday novella in the Death by Cupcake series. I look forwarding to spending more holidays with these girls.

About the Author
D. E. Haggerty
I grew up reading everything I could get my grubby hands on, from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew, to Little Women. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although on the odd occasion I did manage to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. After surviving the army experience, I went back to school and got my law degree. I jumped ship and joined the hubby in the Netherlands before the graduation ceremony could even begin. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic before returning to the law. But practicing law really wasn’t my thing, so I quit (again!) and went off to Germany to start a B&B. Turns out running a B&B wasn’t my thing either. I polished off that manuscript languishing in the attic before following the husband to Istanbul where I decided to give the whole writer-thing a go. But ten years was too many to stay away from my adopted home. I packed up again and moved to The Hague where, in between tennis matches and failing to save the world, I’m currently working on my next book. I hope I’ll always be working on my next book.

"Self-Serve Murder" by D. E. Haggerty

REVIEW and EXCERPT
Self-Serve Murder
(Death by Cupcake Book 3)
by D. E. Haggerty

Self-Serve Murder, the third book in D. E. Haggerty's Death by Cupcake series, has just been released. The author stops by today to share an excerpt from the book. You can also read my review. Also available: Never Trust a Skinny Cupcake Baker (read my blog post) and Bring Your Own Baker (read my blog post).

More books by this author: Murder, Mystery & Dating Mayhem (read my blog post), Jack Gets His Man (read my blog post), and Love in the Time of Murder (read my blog post).

Description
Book 3 in the Death by Cupcake series. Can be read as a standalone.
Kristie is kind with a capital K, so it’s quite the surprise when she wakes up next to a dead man with no recollection of the previous night. Even worse? She’s naked. Kristie may be a sweetheart out to save the world, but sticking her nose into an investigation of rapes across campus makes her the target of a murderer. Before she knows it, Callie is smack dab in the middle of a murder investigation with her colleagues Callie and Anna. If that’s not enough to drive a sane person up the wall, a friend has decided he’s going to keep her safe whether she wants him to or not. And, oh yeah, he’s her man and that’s that.
Come join us at Callie’s Cakes, where murder investigations are on the menu. You are most welcome, but you may need to serve yourself as our barista Kristie is busy trying to save the world.
Warning: Although there are plenty of moments that will make you shake your head and laugh at the antics of the ladies of Callie’s Cakes, the subject matter – rape on college campuses – is very real and somewhat darker than your usual cozy mystery.

Excerpt
I assumed that as soon as we got back to my apartment, everyone would take off and I’d be left alone to contemplate what happened. Contemplate. I snort to myself. Freak out’s more like it. Unfortunately, when I open the door and turn around to thank everyone, the men push their way in before sauntering over to my sofa and collapsing on it. My sofa, heck my apartment, was not made to house the two oversized detectives.
I don’t shut the door but stand at the entrance with my mouth opening and closing in my best imitation of a fish. Think, think, think. Oh yeah, I have the perfect excuse for keeping them out. “Should you be in here? Doesn’t CSI or whatever it’s called in real life need to do their thing? Find clues or fingerprints or something?” There! That sounded reasonable. Not at all like I’m trying to kick everyone out.
Logan snorts. “You watch too much TV.”
Luckily, Ben takes pity on me and explains. “They’ve already come and gone. And even if they hadn’t, it wouldn’t matter.” The confusion must show on my face. The big detective smiles. “We were all here this morning.” Duh. I nod my head in understanding but don’t move away from the door.
Anna sits on Logan’s lap and I cringe as my sofa creaks. “You might as well shut the door and come in here.” Oh great, the troublemaker is on the case. Looks like I don’t have a choice. I shut the door and walk the short distance to my living room. I collapse in the chair across from my friends and close my eyes. Let the questions begin.
“So why were you in that bar anyway? You don’t drink. Or at least the few times we’ve gone out, we nearly had to force-feed you beer.” Callie’s voice sounds genuinely hurt.
I shrug and try to evade giving away the real reason for my visit to the bar. “Am I not allowed to go to a bar on a Friday night?”
“That’s not what I meant and you know it,” Callie immediately snaps. Darn it! I suck at the secret spy mission stuff.
“Sorry, I’m not feeling well.” There, that’s not a lie.
“We just need you to answer a few questions and then we’ll leave you alone,” Ben insists in a gentle but firm voice. Obviously, I’m not getting out of answering some questions and considering I woke up naked next to a dead man, I should probably be grateful I’m getting grilled by my friends instead of cuddling up to some jailbird named Bertha.

Praise for the Book
"I had no idea that a bakery was such a tough and cutthroat industry as everyone connected to this shop seems to be a magnet for murder and odd corpses. It appears that running a bakery is far more difficult than I ever imagined. Written from a first person POV, this cozy mystery was amusing, easy to follow, and pleasantly entertaining, as were all of Ms. Haggerty's previous works. I don't think I could ever tire of them." ~ DJ Sakata
"I loved the three women looking into the mystery and attempting to bring change and take action where the authorities are not. [...] The story pace is fast and the women put themselves into troublesome situations more darkly humorous than dangerous. Since the duo of friends have already solved murders before her, Kristie feels she can't let this one go. Definitely too close to home." ~ Laura Reading

My Review

By Lynda Dickson
This latest installment in the Death by Cupcake series stars Kristie, the barista at Callie's Cakes. Kristie wakes up naked in bed with a dead man and with no recollection of what happened the night before. With the help of her work colleagues Callie and Anna and their boyfriends Ben and Logan, Kristie tries to uncover the truth about what happened that night - before someone else gets hurt. With the addition of a new character, will Kristie finally land a man of her own?
Kristie the barista swears in cute coffee-flavored expletives (e.g., "for coffee's sake"). Also, in her honor, the chapter titles all relate to coffee and could be the slogans on your coffee cup (my favorite: "Procaffeinating: to delay or postpone actions; put off doing something until you've had your coffee."). Even though I guessed the perpetrator early on, the author threw in enough suspects and twists and turns to keep the story interesting. We also see a lot more of Callie and Anna interacting with their partners. While all of the male characters are a bit domineering and over-protective, they are also very loving and lovable. The book comes complete with a recipe for Grasshopper Cake, a mint-chocolate confection. Yum!
This one's a real winner. Are there any more books coming in this series? I sure hope so.

"Bring Your Own Baker" by D. E. Haggerty

REVIEW and EXCERPT
Bring Your Own Baker
(Death by Cupcake Book 2)
by D. E. Haggerty

Bring Your Own Baker, the second book in D. E. Haggerty's Death by Cupcake series, has just been released. The author stops by today to share an excerpt from the book. You can also read my review. Also available: Never Trust a Skinny Cupcake Baker (read my blog post).

More books by this author: Murder, Mystery & Dating Mayhem (read my blog post), Jack Gets His Man (read my blog post), and Love in the Time of Murder (read my blog post).

Description
Anna just wants to earn enough money on the side to buy into the bakery, Callie’s Cakes, where she works together with her best nerd pal, Callie. The last thing she expects to see when she walks into Arthur’s apartment to do some moonlighting is a blood bath. Callie’s ready to jump into the investigation of Arthur’s murder, and she’s bringing another bakery worker, Kristie, into their hijinks whether Kristie wants to or not. But things aren’t as they seem. There are gang affiliations, illegal gambling dens, and ladies of the night to wade through. Will Anna and Callie discover who murdered Arthur, or will Callie’s detective boyfriend and Anna’s self-appointed protector put a stop to such aspirations?
Come join us at Callie’s Cakes, where murder investigations are on the menu, but make sure to bring your own baker, because Anna’s a bit preoccupied at the moment.
Warning: This is NOT your mom’s cozy mystery. Bring Your Own Baker may be a "clean" read, but if gangs, illegal gambling, and pimps make you turn your nose up at your e-reader, you might want to skip this one. Although you’ll be missing some sizzling chemistry between Anna and her protector. Not to mention a whole bunch of witty dialogue.

Excerpt
“Apparently, I’m smart and could take over Arthur’s ‘position’. Oh, and I’m beautiful.” I snort again because really? The bookie must be in dire need of someone to play poker for him if he’s calling me beautiful.
“You are beautiful,” Logan whispers. Before I can snort again, he places a hand over my nose and mouth. “Baby, how can you not know you’re beautiful?”
My eyes widen at his question. “You’re serious?” At his nod, I continue. “Because I’m a pink-haired pixie. No one thinks a pixie’s beautiful.”
Logan’s grin is wicked. “I always thought Tinker Bell was hot.”
I huff. “Tinker Bell’s a fairy, not a pixie.”
“Pixie, fairy, whatever.” He shrugs. “Hot,” he mumbles as his lips find mine. He wastes no time in sticking his tongue down my throat but then abruptly stops. He licks his lips. “Have you been drinking?”
“Vodka.” I nod.
“Vodka doesn’t taste like coconut.”
“It does if it comes out of my freezer,” I tell him with no uncertainty.
He rolls his eyes at me. “You’re a nut.”
“Technically coconut is a fruit, not a nut,” I clarify.

Praise for the Book
"I loved this cozy mystery! It's a well written book filled with lots of laughs and love. Even looking for a murderer was funny when these ladies get involved in the investigation. The main characters in this novel are absolutely priceless. They definitely drive the story. They were easy to get to know and easy to connect with. Their boyfriends sure help the story along. The fact that they are both big and handsome doesn't hurt either. This is a great series ... " ~ Jo-Anne on Goodreads
"It's adorable, it's funny and it has a mysterious bearded man who just happens to make that look work for him (which is not easy). Add to that a murder, some far from legal actions and some delicious cooking and you've got another great book from D.E. Haggerty."~ Magda on Goodreads

My Review

By Lynda Dickson
In this second book in the series, we see the return of all our favorite characters from Never Trust a Skinny Cupcake Baker: Callie and Ben, Detectives Duchamps and Smits, lawyer Fred Advocaat, and baker Anna. Anna has an accounting degree and has been doing some bookkeeping work for computer whiz Arthur. But when Anna finds Arthur dead, she becomes the number one suspect. Sick of police incompetency, Anna teams up with Callie to solve Arthur's murder. Turns out he had some pretty shady clients, all of who become suspects. So Anna and Callie encounter gang members, bookies, illegal poker games, prostitutes, and pimps, but they get a bit of help from an unexpected source. We also get a good introduction to Kristie, who works at the bakery; I have a feeling we might see a bit more of her in the next book.
Narrated in the first person by Anna, the story is sprinkled with cute similes - usually bakery related - as well as candy-coated expletives (e.g., "Sweet sugar cookies!"). Even the chapter names read like the steps in a recipe! My favorite quote: "Having friends you can trust and lean on is ever better than being able to eat cupcakes without gaining weight."
Dena, your mission is complete - I didn't see that ending coming. The story is followed by a recipe for Mocha Fudge Cake with Coffee Icing. I look forward to reading the next in this sweet series.

Another job change, this time from lawyer to B&B owner and I was again fed up and ready to scream "I quit", which is incredibly difficult when you own the business. Thus, I shut the B&B during the week and in the off-season and started writing. Several books later I find myself in Istanbul writing full-time.
