Excerpt
Leon awoke to a loud snuffling in his ear.
‘Frizzle boy, stop that.’
Something gently nudged at his back, not at all like a dog’s paw. Sensing he had unexpected company, Leon swiftly moved to reach for his sword, but it was not nearby.
‘That would not do much good, my son,’ a deep rumbling voice spoke.
Leon looked up at a dark silhouette, blinded by the sun’s glare he could not make out who it was. Slowly he stood, squinting with his hand shading his eyes to clear his vision.
‘You must be Prince Leon?’ The husky voice asked.
Moving position to he could see better, he realised he was surrounded by many figures. Stumbling slightly as he stepped backwards, a strong arm steadied him from behind. A strong aroma of horseflesh meandered around his nose. Turning around to thank the man who had kindly saved him, he found himself staring into the strong proud eyes of a huge centaur with the face of a bearded man, smiling at him. The centaur had a long plaited string of hair on his chin that fell into a neat tail, with a colourful string intricately entwined into its display. His large naked torso bared strong muscled hairy arms that had reached out to stop Leon from taking a fall in his shock. The human-looking body merged into a horse’s torso with four thick horse’s legs. A swishing tail at the back was also neatly plaited with beads and ribbons. He had heard of these centaurs but never had he imagined what one would actually look like. He turned to face the rest of the group, only to notice even more of these beautiful creatures, amongst them stood a group of tall human men. Leon knew that where there were centaurs, then there would also be the human tribesmen known as the Cheroks.
‘Yes, I am Leon,’ he stuttered, a little stunned and lost for words.
‘I am Phellip.’ A tall dark skinned, lean young man stood forward and spoke. ‘My father has sent me to greet you and guide you safely to our village.’
‘How did you know of my arrival?’ asked Leon curiously.
‘The dwarves sent pigeons with brief message of your quest. We communicate often in this way. Very useful on many occasion,’ Phellip explained with a wide grin.

Excerpt
Chapter 25 - A DISCOVERY

We are above Dygore, an old abandoned vamplin layer, Ramdon reminded his Queen. We can make a landing and shelter whilst we wait out the passing of this cloud.

Yes, Ramdon, that sounds reasonable. I see the retreat below, she agreed.

Leading the group of dragons down, so they could shelter, Ramdon smelt the air for a clue of what the ever-growing cloud generated. It was now moving rapidly towards them. He hoped they would make it in time and get under cover before the dark moving cloud was upon them.

Head for the level that holds the landing bays, he Mindtalked to the other dragons. This was a section that had accommodated the landing of the huge flying basca.

Once he was sure his Queen was under the protected roof, he also landed and entered the strange warren of the vamplin lair. Giant black granite crags form strange phenomena upon the lands of the Dygore. In times gone by the vamplins had claimed them as homes and tunneled throughout to create chambers and corridors. Probably up to ten families could live within one lair. He had never been able to venture far within this run down den, because of his size, but he was aware that it had been left empty because it was too close to the mid-mountains. After the Serpent Wars the vamplins did not feel safe so near these mountains that neighboured with the Light Land dragons, whom they consider bitter enemies.

Ramdon kept his body in the shade but peered out at the encroaching cloud. It was beginning to take shape and now separated as a mass of little dots. The dots were moving individually. They had wings.

That’s most certainly not a cloud, he thought.

‘They draw nearer,’ he mumbled to himself.

‘They. Did you say they? Ramdon,’ the Queen asked, hearing his mumblings.

‘Yes, Queen Thimat. I can make out the shapes now and we have an army of vamplins riding upon their bascas. It is as well that we sought cover when we did. It would not do to confront them,’ Ramdon replied to his Queen.

‘Indeed Ramdon,’ she agreed. ‘We would be accused of spying and death can be the only punishment for such a crime in these wicked lands. They would never understand that all we seek is peace in the world.’

The dragons spoke no more, nor did they Mindtalk, lest the vamplins detect their signals.

I have to say, this is not my usual type on Genre in books - but it sounded interesting and I decided to give it a go. And boy am I glad I did! The story grabbed hold of me from the start. I was swept away to another world and enjoyed every minute of it. I can't wait for more from this debut author. Great read!

"Divided Realms: Flight of a Changeling (Aarabassa World Part 2)" by Catherine L. Vickers

Divided Realms: Flight of a Changeling (Aarabassa World Part 2)
by Catherine L. Vickers

Flight of a Changeling is Part 2 of the Aarabassa World series. Also available: Guardian Dragons (read my blog post) and Blood Bride (read my blog post).

Description
Based on the world of Aarabassa where one half is dark and the other is in constant sunlight. A magic barrier divides the darker characters out of the Lightlands.
Prince Raphael is taken on a pilgrimage to heal his illness, by Rikka the herbal nurse, but all is not as it seems.
Prince Amos and Prince Leon depart on separate quests to invite various races, including dwarves, centaurs and merpeople, to the Lightlands Council to ready for battle with the creatures of the Darklands.
Heather, the Changeling is journeying to the Guardian Dragons lair, meeting with the Forest Keepers on her way. Her final destination, to meet with the monshaad Emperor on the other side.

Excerpt
The next few moonwakes saw Heather repeating her skills of Changing to an eagle, believing this the best way to discover any possible inhabitants, but so far it had proved unsuccessful. She sat hidden in a high treetop, contemplating heading straight for the river to locate Sheba and Change back to her own self, when unexpectedly her eagle’s acute hearing picked up the humming sound of quiet soft voices.
‘Did you see that strange white beast?’
‘It’s called a horse,’ another squeaky voice replied. ‘And, it probably belongs to a human so we had better get back.’
The voices did not speak Heather’s language but she understood their words, though she could not find the source. She looked up and observed a small grey bird and quickly Changed to its image so she was smaller and could fly within the tree branches, where the voices had originated from.

Review
Wow! Cathy Vickers has done it again. I read the first book in this series Guardian Dragons and I loved every word of it, and I feel the exact same about her newest book Flight of a Changeling. Featuring the fiery changeling Heather (still my favorite character) as she journeys to the guardian dragons lair meeting with some interesting creatures along the way. The young prince Raphael tries to get Rikka the herbal nurse to heal his illness. Whilst prince Amos and Leon go off on a journey to invite other fantasy characters for the battle with the creatures of the Darklands.
The story line and the plot gets a straight 5/5. It kept me interested the whole time, especially since I am an avid fantasy reader. Writing wise there were some areas which could have been better but there was no real big obvious mistakes just some minor areas that don't really matter, I could hardly notice them. I would really recommend this series to anyone with a love for books. This books has the X factor. I can't wait to read more by this author. Thank you for letting me read these books.
