The Gordonston Ladies Dog Walking Club by Duncan Whitehead

The Gordonston Ladies Dog Walking Club
by Duncan Whitehead

Description
Something is not quite right in the leafy Savannah neighborhood of Gordonston.
As the friends and fellow members of her afternoon cocktail club gather to mourn the death and lament the life of their neighbor, Thelma Miller, not all is what it seems.
As old friends vie for the attention of widower, Alderman and mayoral candidate Elliott, jealousies surface and friendships are strained. An old woman with a dark secret and an infamous uncle plots her revenge for a perceived wrong done over thirty years before, a once successful children's writer with his own secret is haunted by memories of the past and aspiring model Kelly Hudd has just won the trip of a lifetime.
As secrets are revealed and history, both old and recent, unravel and an intertwined web of deceits and lies surfaces in the middle class neighborhood a killer lurks and is anyone really who they seem to be? A mysterious European gentleman in South America, a young Italian count parading the streets of Paris and a charitable and kind hearted nephew recently arrived from India add to the remarkable assortment of characters in this story of intrigue, deceit and revenge. What is the secret a recently retired accountant is trying to hide and just why did the former showgirl and attractive sixty two year old widow Carla Zipp really have plastic surgery?
As the plot thickens and the Georgia summer temperature rises we discover who is destined for an early-unmarked grave in the wooded park that centers the tree-lined avenues of Gordonston.
A mysterious organization with links to organized crime, a handsome fire fighter who can do no wrong and a trio of widows with deep hidden agendas compound a story of simplistic complexity. As twists and turns lead the reader to a conclusion that they will not see coming and a sucker punch ending that will leave readers breathless, the Gordonston Ladies Dog Walking Club's top priority remains the need to chastise the culprit who refuses to 'scoop' after his dog walking sessions in their treasured park.

Excerpt
He took one final draw on his cigarette before flicking the wet butt into the hole he had just dug. It was still dark; the sun not due to rise for another thirty minutes. He checked his watch and confirmed the time. He was still on schedule. He turned suddenly to his left, surprised by the rustling noise he had heard in the undergrowth. A grey squirrel peered out from the bushes before rapidly disappearing into the wooded area to the right. Overhead, a woodpecker began to tap against a nearby oak tree. The ‘rat-a-tat’, like a hammer, echoed through the densely forested landscape.
Satisfied that he was still alone, he re-inspected the freshly dug hole. Ideally, it should have been six feet deep, but four, he thought, would do. It was not the first time he had dug a hole like this, but he wondered though if this one would be the last. He had begun digging the night before and hoped that no one would discover his half-dug hole and half-empty bag of lime salts, which it now appeared, they had not. Usually he would have poured more lime salts into the bottom, to cover the unpleasant smells that would rise from the ground later, but he had decided that the extra bags would be too much to hide. He crouched and leaned over the hole, stretching his arm to full length to pick up his discarded cigarette butt. Unprofessional, he thought. He really knew better than that. He slipped the butt into the packet it had come from, alongside the other nineteen yet unsmoked menthols.
From his vantage point he could see anyone entering or leaving the park. There were three gates, but he had taken the precaution of locking the north and south gates with padlocks, which he would remove and discard once his task was complete. Now the only way to enter the park would be via the east gate, which was the main entrance anyway, and the one he knew would be used that morning.
The recently prepared hole was ensconced just off the welltrodden path that encircled the park; he couldn’t have asked for a better spot to perform his task. If only they were all this easy. He picked up his shovel and placed it out of sight in the undergrowth. He would need it later to fill the hole back in. Though he had dug holes like this before, they were usually not necessary. But the instructions he had received were very specific, that there should be no trace of his work for at least one week. He hoped that four feet was deep enough. He considered his surroundings and decided it was.
The park was located in the center of a middle class neighborhood of approximately 300 homes. It was protected by a wrought iron fence and three gates—perfect for his purposes. Signs proclaimed that this was private property, designated solely for the use of those who lived there. At least half the families in the area owned a dog and regularly used the park to exercise them. Not everyone walked his dog in the park. He estimated that only fifty or so people ever ventured where he now stood.
The Girl Scout Hut, an old log cabin-style building that stood in the center of the park, was available for hire for private functions and neighborhood gatherings as well as for residential association meetings. An extensive wooded area, home to an abundance of wildlife, dominated the interior of park. Trees and shrubbery surrounded the perimeter railings, hiding the interior of the park from anyone traversing nearby streets. A children’s playground in the northeast corner of the park offered wooden swings and forts. These, along with sliding boards and monkey bars delighted the children of those privileged to play there.
Dog walkers took advantage of the wood-chipped track that circled the park. The path wove around the trees and crossed ditches and natural moats. The occasional jogger who ventured into the park would sometimes make use of the track but would have to watch for fallen trees and avoid the sprawling roots that sprouted from the earth. He pulled another menthol from its packet and lit it. He sucked in the mint-flavored smoke and exhaled it into the early morning air. It was hard to hold the cigarette in his gloved hand, so he removed the leather pair that he wore. He wore the gloves not due to any coldness but as necessary to his task.
The sky was no longer black but a dark blue, the sun now on the verge of rising. The first birds of the morning began their song and the temperature was slowly beginning to rise. The unnatural sound of a car engine straining into life could be heard in the distance. Its owner was probably an early morning worker, beginning his day while most were still enjoying their last few minutes of sleep.
It was going to be another warm day, and air conditioning systems would be on high throughout the city. He considered removing the dark coat that he wore but didn’t. It, along with the gloves, was his standard attire when working: an unofficial uniform of his trade. More rustling, this time from the north, made him twist his body and alerted his senses. As before, another squirrel disappeared into the dense wood as the streetlights that illuminated the avenues and streets that ran alongside the park switched off in unison, announcing that daybreak was approaching. Soon bedroom lights would turn on as early risers prepared themselves for the day ahead.

Review
By Gaele
In a cleverly twisted plot, there are 4 possible victims, and yet only one suspect, so far. With an eye for lush imagery and a tongue in cheek sense of the absurdities of suburban living, the satire is intermingled throughout the story, aiding in the reader's enjoyment of the characters and the plots that are set against them.
With distrust and suspicion, friendships and romantic entanglements are revealed, and are slowly unravelling as the plot thickens, with several twists that were unique and very reminiscent of playing the game of Clue as a child. Thoroughly entertaining, the pacing improves as the book moves on to a conclusion that certainly leaves room open for one, or more, murders.

Black Clover: Desecration of Purity by Herbert Kelley

Note: This book is suitable for adults only

INTERVIEW and GIVEAWAY
Black Clover: Desecration of Purity
by Herbert Kelley

Description
When Damon Green had his first sexual experience at a very young age, he could not have known that his new-found sexuality would develop into a full-blown addiction. Women were incessantly on his mind and growing up in a large city like Dallas, Texas, he had ample opportunity to indulge in his every sexual whim. From LaShonda, the first girl to show him what "feels good", to Freda, the woman who haunts his dreams, Damon shows us what struggling with an addiction can do to the mental health of a seemingly normal man.
Most disturbingly, we learn about Damon’s relationship with his mother and how it assuredly played a role in the development of his sexuality. While he wants nothing more than to have a normal relationship with Lynn, the woman he loves, he continues to be bombarded by a demon from his past who is determined to make sure that he loves no one but her.

Featured Review
From the moment I read the first chapter of Herbert Kelley's Black Clover, I knew I was going to have a hard time putting it down. Being introduced to a young man at the time in his life when he has his first sexual experience, which eventually leads to a full blown addiction, was a sure way to draw me in. Hearing Damon Green describe his sexual escapades brought this urban fiction book of erotica to life.
While much of the book is focused on Damon's struggle to control his addiction, we're also introduced to a number of characters who help fuel his flame, namely Freda, the woman of his "dreams," and her cougar mother, Penny. Although Damon tries to resist the feminine wiles of this mother/daughter duo, they seem to possess a certain power over him that only they have control of. Ultimately, as with all of us, it is up to Damon to dig deep within himself to find the strength to keep his temptations at bay.
Kelley is superb at developing major characters and drawing the reader in through extreme detail in the use of urban terminology, legends, and experiences. This work of fiction reads like an autobiography and at times I found myself wondering if it might truly be about the author himself (although he assures me it is complete fiction). My heart ached for Damon when he revealed his relationship with his mother and I have to wonder if that is not the driving factor behind his addiction. Kelley did a great job keeping me interested and longing for more. I'm expectantly awaiting the sequel!.

Interview with the Author

Hi Herbert. Thanks for your generous donation to our giveaway and thanks for joining me today to discuss your book Black Clover: Desecration of Purity.

I live in Australia and hadn't heard of "Urban Fiction" until now. Can you please explain what it is?
Urban fiction, also known as street lit, is a literary genre set, as the name implies, in a city landscape; however, the genre is as much defined by the socio-economic realities and culture of its characters as the urban setting. The tone for urban fiction is usually dark, focusing on the underside of city living. Profanity, sex, and violence are usually explicit, with the writer not shying away from or watering-down the material.

When did this genre come to the forefront?
Urban Fiction has been around since Hip Hop started, but it gained more popularity over the past 15 years.

Who are the most influential writers in this genre?
There are so many of them it's hard to say.

What sparked the idea for this book?
The inspiration was observing people that had an addiction to lust and watching different triggers unfold to ruthless needs because of tragic factors in their lives.

Which comes first? The character's story or the idea for the novel?
The idea for the book came first, then I created the characters.

What was the hardest part about writing this book
The hardest part about writing the book was I felt I was transforming in the a certain character in which I had to do a reality check.

How many books do you have planned for this series?
This book is part of a three book series.

How long did it take you to write this book?
It took about two months to write this book including writers block.

What is your writing routine?
About 4 am I get up and fix a hot cup of coffee and do some research. Then I will look over my previous writing and start writing my new material.

What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?
Keep your confidence up and never take no for answer.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
When I am not working, I like hanging out at the gym and listening to music.

What does your family think of your writing?
Everyone loves my writing. I do not let my mother read my work. She is extremely religious and that is how I was brought up. I do not think she would approve of what I write about.

Please tell us a bit about your childhood.
I grew up in the ghetto in Dallas. Times were tough but we survived. I played sports in school. I went to church frequently with my family. In my spare time we played marbles.

Did you like reading?
Yes, I do.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
When I could come up with stories so easily and they sounded so realistic. That is when I realized I had an imagination to be reckoned with.

Did your childhood experiences influence your writing?
No.

What was your favorite book?
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, because I love books with a lot of different characters.

What can we look forward to from you in the future?
In the future you can look forward to two more parts of the Black Clover Series. The next Black Clover book is written. I will release it at the end of this year. Part three is written as well. I might let the readers decide on an alternate ending. At the moment I'm writing a memoir of my mother's life.

Thank you so much for your time, Herbert. Best of luck with your writing career.

Excerpt
He leaned back on one heel, unruffled by her sarcasm or the look of irritation she’d sent him. Instead, his beautiful lips formed another rousing smile that reached clear to those eyes of blue. “’Tis a fine name for a lovely lass. I’m visiting summer students to conduct a study on risk-taking behavior.”
He still held her hand. In his right hand he held a clipboard that rested against his thigh. “May I come inside and ask you a few questions?” He gazed at her mouth, at her hair, and then scrutinized her from top to bottom. Geez, this man had a way about him—a way of bewitching a woman, fully confident of her surrender—no mistaking the sensual heat of an attempted conquest there.
He had to be kidding.
She pulled her hand free and probably should have shut the door in his inappropriate face, but she couldn’t help giving him a taste of his own medicine.
She ogled him right back. The man was built like a warrior, tall, wide in the shoulders with a chest broad enough for a woman to spend the afternoon exploring. Warrior? That was an odd association to pop into her mind, as if you couldn’t go anywhere these days without bumping into a warrior. Whether he was a university professor or not remained to be seen, but he definitely looked good in those jeans and mocha turtleneck.
His fingers drummed the curve of an impressive biceps as he regarded her, regarding him. She took her time scanning the square jaw and feline angles of his face, but this guy was no tabby cat. Tabbies weren’t warriors. He was cut from the mountains—solid muscle, graceful lines and eyes smooth as still water.
“No, Professor Cunningham, you may not come inside.”

Review

By Lynda Dickson
Calum is Bethia's spirit guide. Soulmates for a thousand years, the souls of Calum and Bethia are destined to live out their lives on earth in human form. They always find each other, but Bethia's risk-taking behavior constantly lands her in trouble, usually leading to her untimely demise.
In this lifetime, Calum retains his memory of their time together but Bethia (now Beth) does not. Calum is charged with breaking the cycle of Bethia's destructive behaviour . He must save her and make her fall in love with him, without exerting his will over her. The catch - once this happens, he will be taken away from her, until their next life together 67 years hence.
This book deftly combines the elements of romance, fantasy, adventure, thriller, and even comedy. Sharon Clare has created an elaborate fantasy world. She clearly demonstrates the difference in chronological times and worlds through the use of Calum's distinctive vocabulary and his unfamiliarity with modern technology, including motor cars, elevators, the mini-bar, telephones, and even zippers. On the run from drug dealers, the police, and a boyfriend she was about to break up with, Beth and Calum form an unlikely duo as they try to clear Beth's name and uncover the mystery of a buried treasure - with a little help from their elven friend, Finn.
As with all good romances, the hero and heroine fight a battle of wills and have a love-hate relationship. This is complicated by Beth's faint memories of their past lives, lives ruled by passion and lust, but not necessarily love. She is the love of his lives, but will the modern-day Beth reciprocate this time? Will Beth be able to resist Calum's warrior charm? Or will she succumb to their destiny once more? What will happen when reality catches up with them? And what will happen when the tables are suddenly turned? You'll just have to find out for yourself.

From the author:
"Ever since I read Tolkien as a kid, I’ve loved the fantasy world of Fairies and Elves. Years ago, I discovered Karen Marie Moning’s books and couldn’t get enough of her contemporary heroines, sexy Scottish druids and the Fae world of the Tuatha Dé Danaan. Her books inspired me to create a mystical world for my own characters to dwell in.
"Thus my Alfarian World was created. The Alfar in my stories are a noble race of elves who inhabit beautiful kingdoms in Alfheim, a dimension closely associated to Earth. Finn is an Alfarian elf who lives with us mortals after he was exiled from Alfheim due to his propensity to play games with humans. Finn can’t deny the entertainment he gleans from his games, but he also has a theory to prove and while doing so he provides humans with a much needed match making service. All the better when he succeeds in pushing people out of their comfort zones - now that’s entertainment!"

Another thriller by Joe McCoubrey! This takes place during the "Troubles" of Northern Ireland and brings you along on Mike Devon's journey around the globe to catch the bad guys once again! During this entire book I could feel myself tensing up with anticipation of what would happen to Devon and Doyle during their trek. The characters are strong and very believable.
Just a wonderful read all the way. Dialogue and scenery descriptions are excellent as Joe is a visual writer. When you read this you can almost hear the bullets exploding! I highly recommend this book for those who love the thrill and excitement of CIA type espionage!!!
