Always the bridesmaid, but never the bride, Rachel Thompson is ready to give up on love, before rodeo cowboy Brooks Reynolds rides into the arena and lassos her heart. His smoldering looks and strong yet tender nature sweep her off her feet.
Life is pinch-worthy and picture-book perfect, except on the eve of her wedding Rachel’s love story is ripped from the pages. After two months of grieving, she discovers her nightmare is never-ending. In order to escape her heartbreaking past, the middle-school counselor relocates to a new city for a fresh start and a second chance at happiness and perhaps even love. Through her faith and the support of her family and friends she discovers sought after answers during an unexpected journey.

Excerpt
More teams compete, until finally team ten enters the starting box.
"This is them, Rachel. Oh, my gosh, aren’t they smokin’?"
Rachel’s eyes shoot in the direction of the commanding man sitting tall in the saddle. His jet-black hair curls slightly against the collar of his royal blue western-style shirt. The short sleeves are rolled to fit snugly against his massive, bulging biceps. It’s obvious where he spends his free time, from the fine-tuned muscles and the dark tan encompassing his fit frame. Oh my, she mumbles as he sits his buck-colored hat firmly on his head. He secures his boots in his stirrups. His long fingers toy with the coiled rope. Sam acknowledges him with a nod and the steer is released. They’re off. Like bullets the three of them skillfully dart one after another. The steer runs for its’ life as Sam’s rope lunges into action. He twirls his lasso with the style and grace of a ballerina demonstrating pirouettes. As if he has mind reading skills, Brooks instinctively releases his rope. The twisted twine skims perfectly under the steer’s hooves and is brilliantly tightened to prevent the two hundred plus pound animal from moving forward. The two riders face each other backing their horses until the steer is air born. Everything is magically timed and over-the-top exhilarating. The ladies are on their feet screaming as the announcer exclaims team number ten has the best time of eight and a half seconds, with only one more team left to compete.
Sam waves his hat at Courtney who shouts and blows him a kiss. Brooks’ eyes dart toward the high-pitched squeal. Even from the distance, Rachel notices the brilliant blue eyes aimed her direction. Her chest heaves as though she ran a half-marathon. She catches her breath and continues applauding the skilled ride. How could a sporting event be so exhilarating and sexually satisfying? Brooks tips his hat toward her, with a crooked grin, and follows Sam to the exit.
With bated breath, Rachel and Courtney watch the next ride. The team is quite skilled, but can’t beat team ten’s ride. The guys are victorious. All eleven teams enter the arena. Team ten smiles proudly as they are awarded their trophy and belt buckles. Sam hurdles the wall and makes his way into Courtney’s welcoming arms. Brooks laughs at his exuberant teammate and hollers for him to get his ass back to the stables. Once again the announcer broadcasts congratulations to team ten the new Smith County team-roping champions. Rachel enjoys the view of the faded jean clad butts exiting the arena. She’s savoring one fine set of firm ass cheeks when the beholder glances back over his shoulder catching her in the act. He winks. She blushes, prior to catching her breath and smiling. Brooks relishes catching her in the act. He turns and tosses an arm over his partner’s shoulders. Sam lifts the trophy into the air. They turn the corner and disappear. Courtney proudly exclaims, "Team ten wins!"
Rachel smiles and says, "A ten - yes, he definitely is a ten."

Praise for the Book
"As a blogger I read a lot of books, but I can honestly say that I have never read a more compelling and beautiful story than this one." ~ Tabitha Stokes, Amazeballs Book Addicts
"This is not a fairy tale romance. This to me was a fiction story of things that happen in real life and real relationships. You have to fight for the love of your kids and relationships and that is what this story is about. You will laugh, cry and feel many more emotions while reading. The biggest one you feel is hope. Thank you for letting me read about Rachel and Brooks. True inspirational read." ~ merwojo
"This book is so dang amazing. I don't think 5 stars does it justice as it needs more than that. If you don't mind feeling raw emotions and having tissues, you won't regret reading this story. This is on my favorites list for this year." ~ Mary Forster
"This book has my highest praises, as well as Ms. Ross. If you’re looking for a good cry, this book is for you, and I promise, you will feel every single sentence as though it’s your own story to be unfolded. My life was forever changed by this book." ~ Stephanie
"Haven't read a fiction book in many years. This one took me from a list of 'to do's' on Sunday afternoon to completely ignoring everyone and everything. Finished over coffee Monday morning! Great read - recommended, if you like love, healing and second chances!" ~ Amazon Customer

My Inspiration for Writing The Strength of Love
Have you ever wished for a second chance at love or ever felt God misunderstood your prayer? Perhaps you’ve said to yourself, "Exactly how strong do you think I am, God?" Do you appreciate and thank your family and friends daily for being a part of your life? These thoughts inspired me to write The Strength of Love - a suspense filled, inspirational love story.
Throughout life we all have conversations with God. Have you ever prayed for something and years later realized your prayer was answered BUT not as you intended? I have, so I incorporated this experience into my heroine’s life. Rachel has many highs and lows, but don’t we all? Many romance books have weak heroines who need a man to validate them, but not Rachel. Rachel is a strong, resilient female. A person stronger than she ever imagined. Rachel discovers her strength through her faith, family, and friends. I’m a firm believer God doesn’t give us more than we can handle. Granted there are times I wonder if he feels I’m made of steel, but he never fails to give me the determination and perseverance required.
As a single parent I have a new appreciation for the role my family and friends play in my life. I used to be an "I am Woman, Hear me Roar" type who felt I didn’t need anyone - boy, was I wrong. Without my family and friends’ support, guidance, and love I would never have succeeded in rearing my son.
But as a single mom I also recognize how difficult it is to date! I continue to dream of a second chance at everlasting, soul mate love. Sitting at home last New Year’s eve, without a date, I decided to write a story about a second chance at love. A love story I would be proud to experience. An always and forever love. Now you’re probably thinking to yourself - how sad … but wait! A person has to learn to laugh at their triumphs and tragedies. While writing this love story I laughed and cried. I have a feeling you will too! Especially when Rachel’s crazy cat Ebony is involved, which is often.
The Strength of Love is an inspiring, suspenseful, second chance at love story. As I was selecting a cover I searched for something that exuded strength, yet with a delicate nature. When I came across the delicate rose petals creating a heart atop the strength of wood I knew I had found my cover. I am absolutely crazy about this cover and the paperback wrap-around version is gorgeous … if I do say so myself! LOL. I also love the title page. The heart on the title page is made up of smaller hearts which exemplifies Rachel’s life and love. Rachel and Brooks’ love story will fill you with hope for 2016.

"Borrowed Magic" by Shari Lambert

EXCERPT and GIVEAWAY
Borrowed Magic
(Borrowed Magic Book 1)
by Shari Lambert

Shari Lambert stops by today to share an excerpt from Borrowed Magic. Also available: the prequel novella Siege (A Borrowed Magic Novella), FREE on Amazon US, B&N, iTunes, Kobo, and Smashwords.

This book blast and giveaway is brought to you by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer.

Description
After a three-year siege, Lord Kern, the dark mage, is dead. Magic has left Tredare, and life is almost back to normal.
For everyone except Maren, that is.
Before the siege, an attack by Lord Kern left Maren near death and with a sliver of magic buried deep inside her. Now, for reasons Maren doesn’t understand, that magic has been triggered, giving her the ability to “see” the truth: that her world is nothing more than a magical façade; and that the kingdom’s hero may not be a hero at all.
But this gift of sight comes at a high cost. Maren is in constant pain, and fears her own death is imminent. Plus, no one believes her suspicions that another Dark Mage has risen, and that Tredare may be in just as much danger as it was when Kern was alive.
With the country’s future in the hands of a man who’s vowed revenge on its king, Maren must convince someone else of the truth. Unfortunately, the only person powerful enough to help is also the one man she can’t trust; the man she almost married; the man who abandoned her and disappeared for three years: Kern’s son.
As Tredare crumbles around them, Maren must persuade him to help – before the king is murdered by the very hero he reveres; and before the same magic that gives Maren the gift of sight also takes her life.

Excerpt
The siege had ended. Lord Kern, the dark mage, was dead.
Maren pushed her forehead against the warm glass, straining for a better view of the commotion below.  A cheer went up from the crowd, and she searched for any sign of the man making his way to the castle. The man who’d saved the city – and the kingdom.
All she could see was a mass of bodies, crowding the path leading up from the city gates.
It wasn’t uncommon to see people in the streets of Delorme. They’d come every day for the past two and a half years, standing in subdued silence as they waited for the daily rations that grew more and more meager as the weeks went by. But today the crowd wasn’t silent. Today was different.
The tent cities beyond the wall, once teeming with soldiers draining the city of life, were now abandoned, destroyed, thin plumes of smoke the only movement. What was left of the lush, green fields sat charred and barren. Desolate.
“Anything?”
Maren jumped back from the window and felt the color rise to her cheeks.
“It’s all right, Maren,” Adare said, trying to get her own view of the street below. “We’re all curious. And you have more right than the rest of us. You knew him better than anyone.”
The dull, familiar ache in her chest forced Maren to hesitate until she was sure she could speak without her voice breaking. Even then, she couldn’t meet the queen’s eyes. “I’m not sure I knew him at all.”

Praise for the Book
"I was enthralled from the very beginning up until the very end. This is one of those rare stories that has been created by a truly talented author, that captivates its readers and pulls them in. I felt every emotion as it reached its final conclusion, and I was able to breathe a sigh of relief that we were given the ending we so desperately hoped for." ~ Tasha Williams, Red’s Midnight Readers
"Borrowed Magic is a spellbinding story, and the mystery kept me turning pages well after I should have gone to bed. Completely engrossing." ~ Dawn Rae Miller, New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author of Larkstorm (The Sensitives Trilogy)
"Shari Lambert has a way of capturing your mind and transporting you into her fantasy world. Filled with royalty and dark forces at court, Borrowed Magic reminds me of a Phillipa Gregory novel with the bonus of magic." ~ Jamie Blair, author of Leap of Faith

About the Author
Shari has always loved to read. "Bookworm" may even be an understatement. But when she discovered Georgette Heyer in high school, her love of reading exploded. Ms. Heyer’s books were not only entertaining, witty, and smart, but they saved Shari from the awkward, unromantic teenage years. To this day, Shari’s favorite books all have romance in them.
Although Shari spent a good deal of her time at Brigham Young University on the ballroom dance team, she did manage to get a BA in History and English before going on to get a Juris Doctorate. After graduation, she decided her first priority was to be a mom - a career she’s stuck with and loved.
In between cleaning, laundry, and homework, Shari writes. Just like with reading, she wants to get lost in a world, whether imaginary or historical.
She lives just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband and four children.

Excerpt

Praise for the Book
"My seven-year-old daughter would not put this down once she started reading. I watched her raise her arms and silently cheer on the fossil hunters from time to time. She finished it with a happy sigh and said 'I can only say it's a good book.'" ~ It's full of stars
"I just read Kittysaurus Rex, it is pure fun and loved it! I am a first grade teacher and can't wait to read it to my class - they are going to love it too!! I am already looking forward to the next book. The story unfolds quickly and keeps you captivated throughout!" ~ Tara Stefanoff
"This is a fantastic book, which combines real dinosaur related facts with a very imaginative and exciting story. The plot is extremely creative, while still being thought out well enough to be believable, and the characters are likable and easy to relate to. I look forward to reading what happens in the rest of this series." ~ Toriz
"I really enjoyed reading Kittysaurus Rex. I'm an adult, not the main audience for this book, but it was quite amusing. I think middle-grade geeky (and I mean this as a compliment) girls who are interested in natural science, dinosaurs and cats would love the story." ~ Sci-Fi-Girl
"This captivatingly astute piece of literature is guaranteed to find its way into everyone's hearts. Definitely not just a children's chapter book series. It's a fun read with cleverly named characters, exciting twists and relatable social-emotional situations. The writing style helps create vivid pictures as if the reader is actually in the story witnessing all that's unfolding. The icing on the cake: The exceptional educational content - paleontology (dinosaurs/trilobites/ancient life), language arts and math - is brilliantly disguised in witty remarks, exciting dialogue and spine-tingling suspense." ~ Robin MacGillivray

My Review

By Lynda Dickson
Clara is a fourth grader with a real passion for dinosaurs. When her brother Roy doesn't let her join his Bone Hunter's Club, Clara forms her own club with her classmate Zeke. Their aim is to stop Mr Vulture, the museum's supposed benefactor, from acquiring any new fossil discoveries and keeping them for himself. Clara and Zeke have to overcome her annoying big brother, evil henchmen, vicious dogs, and even ghosts, to accomplish their mission. They discover some intriguing evidence that's leads them to conclude that a creature they call Kittysaurus Rex actually existed. They also make another amazing discovery that might just help them prove their hypothesis about this new dinosaur species. But will they be able to make their discovery public before the evil Mr Vulture finds out about it?
This book is full of quirky characters whose names suit their personalities. I love the chapter headings made out of bones! However, I'm not a fan of the cover art. There are a few minor editing issues, but overall the book is well-written. One major error was with the "Bone Hunters" being referred to as the "Bone Collectors" on several occasions.
With its engaging characters, tongue-in-cheek humor, and imaginative storyline, this book is fun for kids ages 8 and up - including adults!
While this story is complete, the adventure continues in the next book, Tri-pizza-tops, about another amazing dinosaur species.

About the Author
You might think that being a judge would be a satisfying job. And for years, the Honorable Judge Kludge would've agreed with you. He took enormous delight in his gavel pounding ability every time he dispensed justice. Moreover, he was very talented at furling his eyebrows. During trials, he loved to remain silent and communicate his will only through eyebrow movement.
Outside the courtroom, he was known to love festivities. After all, he was the judge who'd launched the Monday recess 'Croquet Fiesta' as well as the Thursday recess 'Bowling Potluck'. But at a party celebrating his ten-thousandth trial, he felt unfulfilled. That day, the piñata full of gum balls, ordinarily his favorite treat, seemed like nothing more than a hollow, paper maché donkey full of candy. For every criminal he put behind bars, there were ten more criminals to take the last one's place. He began to have what adults call a 'mid-life' crisis. Some people said that it was a very positive sign to have a mid-life crisis at the age of eighty, because that meant he would live to be one hundred and sixty. But Judge Kludge dreamed of leaving his mark. He wanted to accomplish something which would be of inestimable value for humanity.
Thus, the Honorable Judge Kludge decided to step down from the bench and pen the Kittysaurus series.

Book Video

Excerpt
He paused for effect. “We welcome the return of the champion of Salverford—Khan!”
The surprise fight tipped the crowd into a frenzy. Raven looked on in disgust at the writhing crowds encircling him and wished he could escape. Around the arena, images of Khan’s handsome face flashed across the TV screens. There was a detailed profile of the young fighter, accompanied by a montage of his greatest moments in the ring. Raven shuddered to watch it. There was picture after picture of him in masculine poses, video clips of that charming smile, and black and white, slow-motion shots of his powerful, defined body mid-battle. It was sickening.
Collier was forgotten by the fickle crowd, his fleeting popularity dismissed. Khan was a superstar. He had been in Salverford for one and a half years and had never lost a fight. He was an invincible killing machine, and he loved his fame. Khan played up to the cameras, the crowd, interviewers, anybody who’d look at him. He was a show business natural. After his flamboyant TV introduction, the band emerged from backstage. The sea of darkness broke out of the back room and flooded out to the microphones and equipment set out before them.
From the corner of his eye, Raven caught the flash of red again. His eyes flicked over to the backstage door to see the singer emerging. She too wore black, a long, flowing dress that trailed behind her like a wedding dress. Her makeup was dark, nails painted black, her eyes masked in shadow, but it was her hair that caught Raven’s attention. Long. Red. A waist-length river of fire. It provided a stark contrast to the darkness all around her. Surely she wasn’t a prisoner? She looked too well-groomed for that, too regal. She advanced to the edge of the stage, bowed to the crowd before her and took her place behind the microphone.
The commentator started a countdown, the crowd shouting and clapping in unison.
“Five, four, three, two, one!”
As the countdown reached its climax, fireworks erupted around the fighter’s entrance. As the smoke cleared, Khan walked out. His slim, athletic body flexed as he entered, toned and strong, of average height and stunning beauty. He made his way to the ring, smiling and waving at the crowd. His mischievous grin endeared the crowds instantly. He lived to entertain.
Collier stood, dumbstruck, against the rope, as the body of his previous opponent was clumsily dragged away. Khan made his way past his adoring fans and stepped up to the ring. He ducked under the rope and confidently strolled up to Collier, who visibly stiffened with fear.
Collier may have only been in Salverford for a few weeks, but he must have known about Khan. Everybody knew about Khan. In the outside world, he was the idol the teenage girls had posters of. He was the man on all the fitness magazine covers, who men everywhere wanted to be like. Some people had even said that it would be worth getting sent to Salverford just to meet him.
Of course they were delusional. Khan may have been a prisoner, but he didn’t mix with the rest of the inmates. He lived in the opulence and luxury of Emerald Tower. Outside the ring, nobody saw him. He’d occasionally join them in the dining hall when he absolutely had to. It was like community service; he had to be seen mixing with the others sometimes to keep his public image positive, but he was always surrounded by guards.
Khan swaggered up to Collier, stopped a metre away and grinned a malicious smirk. Collier was still frozen, rooted to the spot. The referee joined them in the ring and the commentary began.
“Ladies and gentlemen. Let the show begin!”
The band kicked in. The sounds of snarling industrial metal reverberated around the stadium. The band members thrashed their instruments furiously. The red-haired singer stood at the edge of the stage, clutching her microphone in her left hand, looking down at the floor. The music continued and she lifted her head, raised the microphone to her mouth and began to sing. It was beautiful. Strong and powerful, her potent voice echoed over the growl of the music. She poured her heart into her singing and the effect was mesmerising. Primal and enchanting. The crowd was jumping up and down, dancing and enjoying the beat of the music.
Khan smiled and closed his eyes as the music echoed around the arena. He let the music wash over him, licking his lips as if he was tasting the powerful beats. When he finally opened his eyes, he was ready.
He took a few steps back to his starting position. Collier, still stunned with fear, was jostled forward by the referee into his own place. The crowd started a rhythmic chant, “Khan! Khan! Khan!” He gave a charming sideways grin at the girls in the front row of the pit.
The bell rang.
Khan didn’t move; he just stood in front of Collier, a smile spreading across his lips. Collier’s eyes widened. With lightning speed Khan’s leg swept out in a wide, graceful arc, connecting sharply with Collier’s knee. Collier was thrown off balance and landed heavily on his back, forcing the breath from his lungs.
He gasped for air, choking, then tried to pull himself together and roll over onto his knees. He staggered to his feet and stumbled away from Khan, tripping into the rope surrounding them. As he fell onto the cord, he looked into the eyes of the crowd before him. They grinned back at him, watching in pleasure at his horror. The kick came swiftly, slamming forcefully into the bottom of his spine with great precision.
Nausea and disgust washed over Raven. Collier’s plight was breaking his heart. To have the chance of life so brutally ripped away from him, only minutes after escaping the jaws of death…it was too cruel.
Despite the deafening music, Raven thought he heard the crack as Collier was paralysed. Khan turned away from the weeping Collier and signalled to the crowd, raising his arms in the air in a display of victory. The masses roared with pleasure. He flashed his trademark smile and turned back to Collier.
Khan leant down close to Collier’s face and whispered something in his ear. It was inaudible to all except Collier, whose eyes widened as he heard the words. Khan leapt up and looked back down on his victim, and for a moment there was a hint of pity in his eyes. The moment passed as Khan delivered a quick, powerful kick to Collier’s temple. Raven watched in dismay as he saw Collier screw his face up in anticipation of the kick. As the foot connected with his head, he gasped loudly. It was the last sound he ever made.
Khan smirked and walked to the edge of the ring. He leant over the rope to reach down and kiss the hands of his fans. With an athletic jump, he vaulted the rope and walked into the crowds, people gathering around him to shake his hand. There was a surge as people at the back pushed to get within touching distance of their hero.
Khan was only in the crowd for moments before security came to clear people away and escort him back to Emerald Tower. As he was taken out, the music came to an end, finishing with a loud squeal of guitars. The band members came to the edge of the stage, taking a bow in unison as the crowd cheered and applauded. The band members seemed pleased that Khan had fought well and their song had been a success.
That was when he saw it: a barely noticeable trace of sadness in the red-headed girl’s eyes. Raven remained transfixed on her eyes, searching again for a shadow of regret, pity or guilt.
Behind the crowd, there came a mechanical grinding sound as the enormous metal doors swung open and the guards began herding the prisoners back to their cells.

Praise for the Book
"The Phoenix Project by D.M. Cain is a superbly written debut, soaked in tension and intrigue." ~ Jack Croxall, author of the Tethers trilogy
"The Phoenix Project was extremely hard to put down and even harder to forget once it was over. Each character, the myriad of emotions they endured, and the way my own feelings changed about them as the story evolved, kept me motivated. The Phoenix Project is 'Survival of the Fittest' vs. 'Religious Redemption' at its best! I highly recommend this well-deserved FIVE STAR book!" ~ Thomas Whaley, author of Leaving Montana
"D.M. Cain has written a deep, sensitive novel with focuses on life, death, and religion." ~ Kenneth J Kerr, author of Life as a Double Agent and The First Madam President
A Never-To-Be-Forgotten Masterpiece. In my humble opinion, The Phoenix Project is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. It succeeds in the extremely difficult task of being both thought-provoking and entertaining at the same time." ~ Stewart Bint, author of In Shadows Waiting
